Son of Man

John 12:34 The people answered Him, "We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man? Jesus used a number of titles to refer to Himself...BUT HE MOST FREQUENTLY USED "SON OF MAN." JOHN 10:14 "I AM the Good Shepherd...." JOHN 11:25 "I AM the Resurrection and the Light..." HE MOST OFTEN CALLED HIMSELF: SON OF MAN AND WE ARE LEFT WONDERING WHY?

SON OF MAN

WHY???

No less than 80 TIMES in the 4 Gospels Jesus referred to Himself by this title!!! There are possibly a number of answers....BUT I BELIEVE IT WAS PRIMARILY TO IDENTIFY WITH OUR PROBLEMS & NEEDS.... TO EMPHASIZE HIS OWN HUMANITY!!!
Once upon a time God became a Man!

However, the N.T. nowhere explains the significance of this term...and it gives no clear-cut reason WHY Jesus insisted on using it!

IT WOULD PERHAPS BE MORE LOGICAL TO US IF HE USED TERMS EMPHASIZING HIS DEITY = "SON OF GOD." IT ONLY STANDS TO REASON THAT JESUS JUST WANTED TO COMMUNICATE THE IDEA THAT HE WAS ONE OF US!!!!

IMMANUEL =

GOD WITH US

THERE ARE ABUNDANT PASSAGES WHICH TEACH US ABOUT HIS DEITY...

John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. Colossians 2:9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily

Looking at the ORIGIN of the title might help our understanding The term appears in Ezekiel more than 90 TIMES -- always God speaking to Ezekiel: Eze. 2:1 God said, Son of man, stand on your feet that I may speak with you. Eze. 3:1 God said, Son of man, eat what you find.... CONTRASTING THE HUMANITY OF EZEKIEL TO THE DIVINE GLORY OF GOD!!! GOD EMPHASIZES EZEKIEL'S HUMANITY.... WITH THIS TERM JESUS EMPHASIZED HIS OWN HUMANITY

But in Daniel Son of Man carries a Messianic context:

Daniel 7:13-14 I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a SON OF MAN was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days...And was presented before Him. And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a Kingdom, That all the peoples, nations, and men of every language might server Him. His dominion is an Everlasting Dominion which will not pass away; And His Kingdom is one which will not be destroyed. THIS PICTURES THE CORONATION SCENE

The SON OF MAN became poor and the Servant of all...that we might share in his Glory!!! HE WAS BORN IN A BORROWED STABLE! HE RODE A BORROWED BEAST! HE WAS BURIED IN A BORROWED TOMB!! Luke 9:58

Suppose you are poor & your needs are not being met.... Suppose a friend lets you down & proves to be undependable.... Suppose you have to suffer wrongfully...

Suppose all the unfair, unjust things of this world befall you????
DOES THE SON OF MAN UNDERSTAND?? 1Peter 5:7 Casting all your cares upon Him; for He cares for you.

Mark 16:19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. Romans 8:34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
BUT, ILL TELL YOU WHAT.. THERES A MAN IN HEAVEN!

Son of Man
Used more than 80 times in the Gospels Not Son of David, which was the popular designation of the Messiah Not Son of God (Ps. 2:7), but he acknowledged this title before the Sanhedrin The disciples did not use the title Son of

Jesus derived this term from two principal sources: the books of Ezekiel and Daniel. Originally the title was given to Ezekiel but by the time of Jesus the term had become applied to the Messiah. (see

Ezekiel passages that would have special meaning to Jesus were the passages concerning a remnant to be spared (6:8); the new heart and spirit (11:19; 36:26-27); the divine shepherd seeking he lost sheep (34:11-16); the new everlasting covenant (37:26); and the promise that the Gentile nations

There can be no doubt that Daniel 7:1314 was in the mind of Jesus when he used the title Son of Man. By using this title
Jesus was expressing and identifying with the Messianic hope. He was conscious of being the Messiah.
