KBSR Syllabus 2002

Philosophy of KBSR
To provide basic education for pupils to achieve a harmonious and balanced development in their intellectual, emotional, social and physical aspects.

Implementation for success: Learning activities meaningful related to daily life experiences & development stage Conducive learning environment Organised classroom, active pupil participation , Flexibility of lesson activities and classroom management Evaluation and feedback remedial / enrichment

Objectives of KBSR
1. To master Malay language in a satisfactory manner so as to conform with the official status of the National Language 2. To master basic language skills, i.e. to speak, read and write according to the medium of instruction in respective primary schools 3. To acquire basic skills in counting 4. To master other learning skills based on basic skills 5. To enable pupils to understand, read, write and speak English Language

6. To enable pupils to develop their intelligence, leadership quality and self confidence, and to acquire sufficient knowledge as well as to upgrade their capability level through the application of the basic skills which they have mastered earlier; and 7. To provide opportunity for pupils to participate actively in activities related to art and recreation within the aspects of national cultures.

8. To be friendly and respect the rights of others, possess the spirit of working together 9. To enable pupils to develop their intelligence, leadership quality and self confidence, and to acquire sufficient knowledge as well as to upgrade their capability level through the application of the basic skills which they have mastered earlier; and 10.To provide opportunity for pupils to participate actively in activities related to art and recreation within the aspects of national cultures.

Why KBSR?
1. Repeated contents of certain subjects for 6-yr primary school, content not systematic and connected 2. Too many learning materials in the syllabus, over-burdened the pupils, boring and uninteresting 3. Teachers and pupils under pressure to rush & finish the syllabus within a short period of time 4. Teaching & learning activities too rigid, based on text-books only

Pedagogical Approaches
1. Multiple Intelligences ( Gardner 1993) 7 types of intelligences-* linguistic, *logical/mathematical, spatial, musical, kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal -- various teaching strategies / learning stations / alternative assessments 2. Thinking skills Critical , creative, problem-solving -- knowledge -- skills -- attitudes and values

3. Mastery learning (all learners master learning outcomes before proceeding)

Standard-based English Language Curriculum

Teachers trained to be more multi-specialised Emphasis Yr 1 & 2 = mastery of Reading, Writing, Arithmetic & reasoning skills, scientific & ICT knowledge, & nurturing creativity Yr 4, 5 &6 = acquiring more complex skills & knowledge Move from centralised to school-based assessment Reducing number of exam papers & subjects Semester-based assessment

Main Change
Main transformation is to make learning fun and to move away from an exam-oriented environment
