S76C+ AHRS

Attitude & Heading Reference System (AHRS):

Combines multiple functions in one single unit:

Vertical Gyro; Gyro Stabilized Magnetic Compass; 3 Rate Gyros.

No moving parts involved unit is strapped down to

the aircraft and uses Fibre Optic Gyro technology; AHRS provides:

Pitch Angle; Roll Angle; Magnetic Heading; Angular Rates around aircraft axes.

G81 Avionics

S76C+ AHRS

In the S76C+, its a Litef LCR-92 AHRS:

AHRU (Attitude & Heading Reference Unit):

Located in the nose avionics compartment.

Flux Valve - in the rear of the tailboom; MSU CalPROM:

Compensates for flux valve errors and avionics tray misalignment Specifically set for each aircraft.
Allows pilot to decouple AHRS from the Flux Valve; Allows pilot to reset heading, such as for certain rig landings.

Compass Control Unit:

G81 Avionics

S76C+ AHRS Modes

The Litef LCR-92 AHRS operates in 4 modes:

Ground Alignment; In-Flight Alignment; Slaved Mode; DG Mode

G81 Avionics

AHRS Cockpit Procedures

Ground Alignment:

For OATs < 35C, the AHRS easily self-aligns; This procedure takes 30-seconds, more for high OATs; AHRS measures the rotation of the earth in space -really! The aircraft should not be moved until the TR, HDG, and ATT flags disappear from the EFIS displays.
After a power loss in flight the AHRS can self-align; Keep straight and level for 30-seconds until flags out; Str & Lvl defined as Pitch 10, Roll 5, Yaw < 1/sec. Pilot can force a realignment by resetting AHRS CB.

In-Flight Alignment:

G81 Avionics

AHRS Cockpit Procedures

Slaved Mode:
The AHRS automatically operates in Slaved

Mode as long as it receives valid input data from the flux valve and that it is not switched manually to DG mode. AHRS Heading is synchronized with the flux valve, providing gyro-stabilized magnetic compass heading information; Gyros provide short term reference to aid in dynamic flight conditions, and in turns.
G81 Avionics 9

AHRS Cockpit Procedures

DG Mode: Pilot can manually switch into DG mode due to local conditions; AHRS operates as a free directional gyro; Heading is subject to drift, estimated @ < 9/hour. DG symbol displayed on the EHSI. If flux valve fails and the AHRS switches to DG mode, a HDG flag appears.
