ThinApp Application Assignment

VMware ThinApp provides application virtualization by decoupling an application from the underlying operating system and its libraries and framework and bundling the application into a single executable file called an application package To manage ThinApp applications in View Administrator, you must use the ThinApp Setup Capture wizard to capture and package your applications in MSI format and store the MSI packages in an application repository.

You can use View Administrator to distribute and manage applications packaged with ThinApp.

Managing ThinApp applications in View Administrator involves capturing and storing application packages, adding ThinApp applications to View Administrator, and assigning ThinApp applications to desktops and pools.

Steps to Deploy ThinApp Applications to Desktops

Package the application. Create a network share the application repository. Register an application repository in View Administrator. Add ThinApp applications to View Administrator. (Optional) Create a ThinApp template.

Step 1: Capture and store ThinApp application packages:

Step 2: Assign the ThinApp applications to desktops that are vCenter Server virtual machines:

Assign one or more applications to one or more desktops. Assign applications to all desktops in one or more pool.

Step 3: Maintain and monitor the ThinApp applications:

Remove applications. Remove ThinApp templates.

Create a Network Share and Populate with MSI Packages

1.

2.

3.

4.

Create a shared folder on a computer in an Active Directory domain that it accessible to both your View Connection Server host and View desktops. Configure the file and sharing permissions on the shared folder to give Read access to the builtin Active Directory group Domain Computers. If you plan to assign ThinApp applications to domain controllers, give Read access to the builtin Active Directory group Domain Controllers. Copy your MSI packages to the shared folder.

Register an Application Repository in View Administrator

Register repositories so View Administrator knows the locations of the network shares that contain the MSI packages:

Select View Configuration > ThinApp Configuration.

2010 VMware Inc. All rights reserved

Add ThinApp Applications to View Administrator

Select the ThinApp applications in the repository you want to add to View Administrator:

In View Administrator, select Inventory > ThinApps.

2010 VMware Inc. All rights reserved

Scanning New ThinApp Applications

Select applications to scan.

View Administrator scans each application for package details.

Applications are ready for assignment.

2010 VMware Inc. All rights reserved

Assign ThinApp Applications

Select the ThinApp applications you want to assign to either a pool or desktop. Click Add Assignment and make a selection.

2010 VMware Inc. All rights reserved

Assign ThinApp Applications to a Pool

1.

2.

On the ThinApps page, select an application, click Add Assignment, and select Pools. In the Add Pool Assignment dialog, select the target pools and click Add.
Only pools that do not have this application assigned are in the list.

3.

Select the installation type for the ThinApp application:

Stream the executable from the network share. Install the executable on the desktops local file system.

The application is installed the first time a user logs into a desktop in the pool.
