Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question: Which I/O cards are supported by the M8428-k? Answer: The M8428-k supports the following cards: Brocade BR1741M-k 10 Gbps Converged Network Adapter (CNA) Broadcom NetXtreme II 57712-k Dual Port 10Gb Ethernet Network Daughter Card (NDC) Intel Ethernet X520-x/k 10Gb Dual Port Converged Network Adapter (CNA) All 1Gb Network Interface Cards (NICs) available on M-Series blades Future 10Gb adapters for PowerEdge blade servers Question: Both iSCSI and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) carry SCSI packets. What's the primary difference between the two protocols? Answer: iSCSI is IP based and is routable. However, FCoE is Ethernet based and non-routable, so single hop. Question: Can the 8 x 10gb ports carry FCoE traffic as well? Answer: This is not available due to the single hop limitation. Question: On the M8428-k, is Fill fabric or NPIV mode selectable by customer or must it be set in advance and not changeable? Answer: The customer can select Full fabric Fibre Channel Switch Mode or NPIV Mode for SAN-agnostic Fibre Channel connectivity. Question: How do the Dell CNAs compare to the CNAs on Cisco UCS for NPar? Answer: Cisco UCS does not use NIC partitioning and implements a proprietary version of SR-IOV. Question: How does this compare to HP FlexFabric? Answer: Dell NPar is a h/w partitioning solution which is switch independent unlike the HP solution. Also, the HP FlexFabric and Flex10 solution needs to reboot when you change the bandwidth you need. The M8428-k does dynamic bandwidth changes as you apply.
