The filter is the only thing in an HVAC system you can change a filter reasonable cost. In a typical ventilation system with at one step in the inlet- and the outlet air, the
Pressure Drop is distributed as (Pa): Ducts (inlet- plus outlet air) Filters (inlet- plus outlet air)* Heat exchanger (inlet- plus outlet air) Cooling coils Heater Sound reduction (inlet- plus outlet air) Joint duct 500 350 240 60 50 40 10 1250 Pa 40% 28% 19% 5% 4% 3% 1%

The increased cost of energy

Calculation of energy:

q dP t kWh/year E 1000

q dP t

= Air flow (m3/s) = Pressure drop (Pa) = Operating time (hours/year) = Total fan efficiency (0,1 - 0,7)

LCC life cycle cost of filters

The life cycle cost for the filter is the cost of the:
Filters Labour/service cost Energy consumption Cleaning of ventilation system Disposal of used filter

The filter construction and design

The service life of a filter increases exponentially to the surface area, 50% more area will double the service life The pressure drop development will be much lower with a large surface, using a optimised construction

The outdoor environment impacts the lifetime performance of air filters significantly

Estimations of the inlet air quality are very important

Field tests of air filters in real environment is essential (efficiency and loading characteristics)

Conclusions

About 30% of the ventilation systems energy cost comes from the air filters The filter is the easiest component to replace in an AHU LCC analysis = optimise the operating costs and the energy consumption. An LCC-analysis of a real situation consists of a number of input data that has to be considered Good air filters = energy and operation costs drastically reduced
