The Orientation Process


Orientation includes the activities involved in

introducing newcomers to the organization and helping them adapt to their work units. This is accomplished through:

The HR department is responsible for the

design and conduction of the orientation process, and must ensure that both requirements and rewards are communicated and understood during orientation.

The Orientation Process


Orientation programs usually contain two tiers

which covers issues such as:

General topics of interest to most new employees


Organizational issues Employee benefits etc

Specific job related issues of concern only to specific jobholders


Introduction to key personnel Job duties

Purpose of Orientation
Integrate newcomers into the organization Make familiar with organizations history etc.

Provide with a sense of direction


Define organizational objectives to newcomers

Assist in assimilating company values Bring company goals into focus and help align these Review the organizations culture and products
Distribute information materials Assist with motivation, retention and job satisfaction

The Socialization Process


Organization Socialization is defined as the

process by which a person learns the values, norms, and required behaviors which permit him to participate as a member of the organization. (Maanen, 1976). The concept of socialization thus refers to the process of adaptation and guided adjustment that takes place as individuals attempt to learn the roles, values and norms of an organization.

Like orientation, the goal of socialization is to

achieve effective person/job and person/organization matches.

Most organizations treat new members in a

haphazard way. However, the socialization process in general is characterized by a sequence of identifiable steps. A three-phase model of organizational socialization, promoting an enhanced understanding of the concept / process, was developed by an organizational behavior researcher, Daniel Feldman.
