time periods for reading self-selected books silently. During USSR there are no interruptions and as the program continues the period of silent reading gradually increases.

OBJECTIVES OF USSR

To help pupils from good reading habits for

extensive reading To increase pupils desire to read on their own during their free time To develop in pupils a life-long love of reading

KWL
KWL is intended to be an exercise to study group or

class than can guide you in reading and understanding a text. K what we Know W - what we Want know L what we Learned

K stands for know

Brainstorm

Before looking at the text, think of keywords, terms,

or phrases about the topic, either in your class or a study group Record these in the K column of your chart until you cannot think of more Engage your group in a discussion about what you wrote in the K column Organize the entries into general categories

W stands for Will or Want

Preview the texts table of content, headings,

pictures, charts etc. Discuss what you want to learn List some thoughts on what you want, or expect to learn, generally or specifically. Think in terms of what you will learn, or what do you want to learn about this

Turn all sentences into questions before writing

them down. They will help you focus your attention during reading. List the questions by importance.

L stands for Learned

List out what you learn as you read, either by section,

or after the whole work, whichever is comfortable for you. Check it against the W column, what you wanted to learn Create symbols to indicate main ideas, surprising ideas, questionable ideas, and those you dont understand

5 Ws and an H

SQ4R
S survey

Q - question
R read R recite

R wRite
R - review

Survey
Skimming and scanning a chapter or a assignment to

get an idea of what the material is all about and how it is organized.

Question
Writing a question (who, what, when, where, why,

how) for each heading and subheading in an assignment.

Read
Students read the paragraphs under particular

heading or subheading to get an answer to the question they developed. Note they are only reading a small amount of material. Difficult material may have to be reread.

Recite
Once a section under a heading or subheading has

been read, students should recite aloud in their own words the answer to their question for it. If a student doesnt know the answer, the section needs to be reread.

wRite
Once students have recited an answer, they should

write it down under the question. They may also write down brief notes or examples under the question, if needed for better understanding.

Review
It is to be done after answers to all questions have

been written down. The review includes skimming over the headings and subheadings again, reciting the important ideas under each heading and subheadings, and answering all the questions.
