-CIVIL ENGINEERING
Green building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resourceefficient throughout a building's life-cycle from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction. Green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by: Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources. Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity. Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation .
For example, green buildings may incorporate sustainable materials in their construction (e.g., reused, recycled-content, or made from renewable resources); create healthy indoor environments with minimum pollutants (e.g., reduced product emissions); and/or feature landscaping that reduces water usage (e.g., by using native plants that survive without extra watering).
GREEN -HOME
WHY BUILD GREEN? Build Green because it is intrinsic to our mission. Build Green because it is good for the environment and the community. Build Green because it is good for our Organization.
When Bill Clinton was elected President in 1992, the green build/sustainability communities began to toss around the idea of Greening the White House as a way to put their ideas on the radar of everyday American society. With the overwhelming success of the Greening of the White House other governmental institutions have since been given a green makeover. The United States Green Build Council (USGBC) is the foremost leader and educator within the world of green building today. They are the sanctioning body for LEED, the program with which points are\ awarded to various design applications within a building ultimately resulting in LEED certified. LEED (Leadership in energy and Environmental design) is a system for designing, constructing, and certifying green buildings. Buildings are classified as Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum depending upon the number of points they acquire within 6 building components.
GREEN CRITERIA
green building, for the purposes of LEED, is defined by how well it meets the LEED criteria in its five main categories, with bonus points available in the sixth category, Innovation & Design Process. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Site Selection Water Efficiency Energy Efficiency Material Reuse Indoor Environmental Quality
All Green Communities homes are built according to the Green Communities Criteria, the first consensus-based, holistic standard developed for healthy, efficient, environmentally friendly affordable homes.
