Question in different size and colour

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real music magazines?
When researching I was looking at different types of magazine and see what ideas I can take from others or change to make it better in my own way. The magazine that I found most interesting when I was researching was the XXL and The Source the reason why I have looked at these two magazine more than other hip hop magazine is because of their simplistic fonts and the way everything is laid out. When you look at the magazine and you see how spaced out everything is this makes it more clearer for the reader to read. It is also easily eye catching because of the colour scheme. On the next slide I will be showing the similarities of my magazine and the sources magazine.

I have got a slogan which is the book of hip hop this gives a catchy name to my magazine Artist in this will help the readers remember what my the front magazines about because a slogan also gives a cover personality to a brand or company. I have also seen many other magazine do the same.

The picture overlaps the masthead this allows you to see the model , but when doing this you have to make sure the reader can still read the title this is also seen in other types of music magazine. It makes the artist look dominant makes them look like they are more important than the magazine.

This magazine also has a slogan which relates to what sort of topic the magazine will show.

Sell line on the top of the page to catch the readers attention.

The reason why I have decided to put a sell line their because when the magazines are in the shops they will most likely be on the shelf this may cover the picture so I've decided to put a eye catching sell line on the top so that the reader grabs it first . Not many magazine put sell lines on the top of their magazines because they believe its an eyesore.

What my magazine and The source had in common was a colour scheme. The colour scheme in my magazine front cover was blue, black and white and in the source it was red, white and black the main reason why I have decided to make a colour scheme instead of adding different colours is because everything look more clear and neat this makes it easier for the read to read and also gives a attractive image because of the pattern. Another thing I had in common with the sources is magazine is that in sell lines the key words and sentences were highlighted in both magazine. the key words that where highlighted in my magazine is "win meet artist and in The source it is suicide is not an option. What this allows the reader to do is find the key words and quickly find out what is going to be in the magazines.

I have put a barcode on my magazine because I majority magazines generally put it in the front cover

News, features and trend the reason why I have split it into three section is because when researching about magazines I learnt that some people buy magazines for one thing. For example some people buy it for trend to see what is in fashion and what is out.

Both magazines have contents written in a big but simple and in a clear font. Most magazines have it written in the top of the page

I have categorised my contents page into three different sections which are news, features and trend this will make it even easier for the reader to navigate through the magazine. The other content page also categorised everything into different sections majority magazines have started doing this because it makes it allot easier and faster to find the page you are looking for.

Page numbers to help you navigate through the magazine. It makes it much more easier to find what you are looking for

Both images give link to another page which will be about the picture. This will allow the reader to go to the page he or she wants straight away.

this also has page numbers to make it easier for you to navigate through the magazine

Mines and the example magazine both have a different size font for the introduction of the magazine the reason why I have decided to do that is because I wanted to give the audience/readers a glimpse of what are we going to be doing and talking about. I believe the example magazine also has the same reason as me. Both magazines have the questions in a different colour this allows the reader to see the difference between the questions and the paragraph since the print is small

Both artist have a quotation this allows the reader to have a feeling what the artist is feeling at the time of the interview.

The main image is related to the story. The reason why they take up half the page is to show how important they are since the article is about them. Also its great to see the artist facial emotions because it will show us how they are feeling depending what the articles about.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

When researching I have decided to aim for specific groups of people to buy my magazines. How I did this is by looking at other magazines in my genre and what age group would usually buy these hip hop magazines. What my research told me that most people where in the age group of 14-25 this gave me a rough idea what age group I should follow. So the age group I targeted in my magazine swag up were ages between 16-24 years old the reason why I have decided aim for 16 years instead of 14 years old is because some of the content in my magazine will be a bit inappropriate for a younger age group. The audience who will be reading my magazine will most likely be young male since hip hop Is mainly dominated by males but I am aiming for both sex because I want to break this barrier and invite more females into the hip hop industry. I believe that most of my audience will be from main cities and towns the reason why is because hip hop has a urban culture this helps me pin point what location I should sell most of my magazines. How does my magazine swag up represent the social groups I am aiming for firstly you can tell by just looking at the magazine front cover and what the model/artist is wearing. What he is wearing is a hoodie mostly worn by young males and females in a urban culture this already tells you that what sort of magazine its about. Another thing that represents the urban social groups is the way the artists are posing in my front cover, contents page and double page spread. How the model from double page spread is posing by making a hand sign to show what area he comes from this is something the audience will know and straight away know that its is a hip hop magazine. The model/artist on my front cover is also posing in a way that most urban people will take their photos in this shows the reader straight away what type of magazine it is. Another way I represent the urban social group is that the sell lines in the front cover of the magazine I have famous names of celebrity that people look up to these artist are not just normal artist these artists define hip hop music the artists I have names I put on the front cover are Tupac and Jay z two of the biggest icons in the industry. Finally I have also made my magazine cheap because the target I am aiming for most likely don't work but if they do its only minimum wage since they are young. The price of my magazine is 1.99 and it is a weekly magazine this is another reason why I mad it so cheap.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The institution that could potentially distribute my product is IPC media this mainly because they are a experienced company that have worked with over 60 other companies this makes me feel that I can trust them because of the amount of companies they have worked with and they have no bad reputation. The company was founded in Britain London in 1958. The company sells 350 million copies each year this makes me feel confident because it makes me feel that I can sell quite a few copies. One reason why I have decided to pick IPC media is because it is British founded this might make more people from Britain to buy my magazine because they want to help a company with in the country. Another institution that could potentially distribute my product is Hearst corporation the reason why I have picked this company it can most likely help my magazine go world wide since it is an international company this might help my magazine go big in other countries like in America. The company was founded in 1887 in san Francisco it was founded by William Randolph Hearst. The company has a revenue US$3.78 billion this tells me that this company has been successful this might also help my magazine swag up become successful because of the good image Hearst corporation has.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target market I have decided to pick for my magazine swag up are young males and females in the ages between 16-24 the reason why I have chosen this when I was researching on hip hop magazines allot of young people intend to buy them since they are most interested whats going on in the industry. The type of people who would buy my magazines are urban people because hip hop grew up in a urban society so most of the people who grew up in the cities they have most likely grew up listening to a bit of hip hop whether they liked it or not. Most my audience will be in school or in working class environment because most people who listen to rap live in deprived background and this is what most rappers talk about before the money and fame comes into there life this is why pricing is really important because if it cost too much they will most likely not buy the product. The things that my target audience would do in there spare time is go out allot go to the parks and youth clubs and hanging around with the friends and socialising with others, they will also be reading magazines and playing games. When they are busy they will most likely revising or they will be doing a part time job.

How did you attract / address your audience?

What I decided to do to attract my audience is give away free tickets to their favourite artist concert if they had win the competition. The reason why I have decided to do this is because since my audience are young age 16-24 they most likely don't have enough money to spend on a V.I.P tickets to a concert to meet their favourite artist instead for 1.99 they can try win the tickets which will save them much more money. I believe that this is a great way for people to start reading your magazine by giving a little back to the customers/consumers.

Dj k is back the reason why I wrote the is back part white it is because it is eye catching when a reader sees something like this the reader always gets hooked on because the want to know what happened . I also believe that colour scheme made the magazine stand out more then others. The repetitive colours of blue, black and white made the magazine look more appealing and it catches the eyes attention allot more then other magazine

How did Tupac make hip hop main stream this will teach readers about the history of hip hop and where it started. When researching about hip hop many young people where interested how it all started so this is giving a bit back to the readers.

Only 1.99 this shows the readers that this magazine is cheap and you can get allot out of it. For example meet your favourite artist

the book of hip hop having a slogan to a magazine helps the readers remember the magazine more because it adds a meaning to the magazine. The reason why I added it on is because it adds a identity on to the magazine. This will help the audience remember my magazine over other hip hop magazines

top 25 songs of 2006 to 2012 I made the 25 larger so that the sell line attract the reader more since it makes it more eye catching

Audience feedback
I used Facebook to get feed back for my magazine I believe this is a great way because it quick and easy to ask people. This will help me go back on my magazine and see what I can do better next time.

Questions:
1. Did you find my magazine appealing 2. Would you buy my magazine please explain you answer 3. What would you improve in the magazine

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
When making my product the school magazine I encountered many problems with adobe Photoshop. The reason to this is because I couldn't really figure out how to use it. But encountering these problems, when making my school magazine has helped me with my music magazine because I knew what to do when a problem happened for example when using photo shop the first time I didn't really no how to use the lasso tool but after knowing how its used it helped me manipulate the photos. In the process of making my magazine what I did to smoothen out the edges is use the magic wand tool this gave me a fine finish to my magazine. Other things I learned with photo shop is to use the correct layer this helps you put objects in front or behind another. Other programmes I encountered while doing this course is Scribd and the Fronter. Scribd helped me put my presentation on blogger and Fronter helped me transfer my work from school pc to home pc.

What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from your preliminary task to the full product?
I believe that I made progression since my preliminary task to my main music magazine task this is basically because I have gained more knowledge on publishing. If you were to compare my school magazine and my music magazine you could be able to tell which is done to higher standard. The reason why I believe I did bad in my school magazine is because I didn't have much research and planning like I did in my music magazine. When I did my school magazine what ever came to my head I did it I didn't think it through this was my greatest mistake. With my music magazine I drew everything out so that it makes everything more easier this helped me plan and I knew where everything is going. After this planning stage I started with my main product. But what the preliminary task let me do is play about with some of the tools in photo shop it help me understand how to use the right layers and use other tools like all three types of the lasso and magic wand. This helped me become more confident when it came to the music magazine. When making the front cover of your magazine you have to think about everything you do and how it looks to the consumers. When I was making my magazine sometimes I would have too much space but then when I added on to my work it looked like everything was just on top of each other so what you would have to do is create space. The solutions for this was to look at different fonts which helped me balance out my work so it wasn't to crowded or it didn't have to much space. The problems I had with my double page spread is that I wrote too much so I had to edit allot of my texts which took allot of time but what I learnt is that when making a magazine the smallest things can affect what you are doing. The main reason why I think my music magazine is better than my school magazine is because I didn't rush it and I went through planning carefully, this helped it look more professional.
