Objectives of working Team -2 in the current Japan tour under CNCRP

Condition of Existing Buildings

Present condition in Bangladesh

Most of the existing buildings were not built by considering

seismic forces.

Without seismic detailing. Small column size.

Plain rebar is used.

Weak Beam Column joint. Infill masonry wall is used in frame structure. Most of the buildings are not durable due to poor concreting. Mixed frame structures.

Observation in Japan

Seismic force is considered to design the building. Large column size is observed. No deterioration of concrete and rebar of the existing building.

Item of activity to be considered for CNCRP

Strength of the existing building material to be tested.

Capacity of the existing building to be estimated by analytically and experimentally.

List of martial strength to be tested by period wise. Experimental facility to be established.

Long term goal/ achievements

We have to prepare the existing building inventory for the whole

country by following the test result.

Depending on the test result we need to retrofit or demolish the structure.

There is no guideline for seismic retrofitting.

No specific categorization procedure in Japan.

Some top down selection procedure exist.

We have to prepare a categorization guide line for seismic retrofitting as per direction of JET.

CNCRP together with JET need to find out suitable technique for implementation.

We have to prepare the building inventory for the whole country

by following this categorization guideline.

Almost no such capacity.

There are specialized group of structural designer capable for seismic assessment and retrofitting design.

Need to prepare seismic vulnerability assessment manual. Need to retrofitting design manual. Need to learn the way of pushover analysis. Need to learn dynamic time history analysis.

Manual should be prepared with the help of JICA Expert Team. JET will help to learn these analysis properly.

Present condition in Bangladesh

There is a lack of capable structural design engineer. Building construction regulation is not strictly followed.

Building code is strictly followed by consultant and construction agency.

Need to prepare seismic design manual for new building. Need to learn the way of pushover analysis for the design of new building.

Need to learn dynamic time history analysis for the design of new

building.

Way of Implementation

PWD engineer will prepare this design manual with the help of JICA Expert Team. PWD engineer will learn these analysis procedure with the help of JICA Expert Team.

Long term goal/ achievements

PWD engineer will disseminate these knowledge to the public and private sector. Licensing system for the professional engineer for design and construction of building should be followed strictly.

Present condition in Bangladesh

Since there is no retrofitting works in Bangladesh so there is no guideline for public safety and security.

Various steps are considered to ensure public safety and security.
