INTRODUCTION What is Histopathology

Histopathology (compound of two Greek word's: Histo", pathology ")Histo mean tissue and Pathology which mean the study of the essential nature of a disease and the abnormality of structure and function .histopathology refers to the examination of a biopsy or surgical specimen by a pathologist,.

IMPORTANT POINTS FOR SAMPLE COLLECTION AND TRANSPORTION

Check following things and match them on slip, container and in history Patient name Age Gender Patient mobile or Land lined # Patients Doctor name Specimen type Clinical detail Complete history of patient

Complete history
Complete history mean tissue biopsy site should be mentioned what type of tissue is sending for histopathology and what is the clinical diagnosis of patient. Must match the tissue type mentioned on container and on form (both should be same) If on form it is written that tissue for histopathology is not a complete history What is sent for histopathology and why (specific diagnosis) In clinical history must make sure that cytology sample is not for histopathology (as body fluid) Similarly make sure that biopsy sample is not for cytology

Surgical sample should be in formalin

If you received biopsy sample must check it is received in formalin or without formalin. If received without formalin then add formalin Always check the level of formalin Tissue should be properly dip in formalin However there should not be over loaded formalin that may cause spill due to leakage

History check for biopsy container

If in history two containers are mentioned make sure that you received two containers. Make sure both containers are for histopathology Check history and request if both are for histopathology or one is for cytology or microbiology If both containers are for histopathology make sure that both should be in formalin. Above policy is applicable if multiple containers are received . Must check coding of each containers

Proper container
Sample should be in proper container. Preferred containers are open mouth plastic container with formalin up to appropriate level. If needed change container such conditions could be when tissue is large size but container is small ,sharp bin ,plastic bags or glass bottle should be replaced . While changing container be careful for placing all tags and tags having sample information on bottle put them on new transferred container. All detailed information should match with those written on container. If there is no tissue or empty container it could be return and refund as well. proper handling of tiny tissue
