reaction Types of chemical reaction Combination reaction Decomposition reaction Types of decomposition reaction Endothermic and Exothermic reaction
1. CHEMICAL REACTION
When (reactants) compounds reacts to form new (products) compounds is called chemical reaction.
There are four types of chemical reactions : 1. Combination reactions 2. Decomposition reactions 3. Single replacement reactions 4. Double displacement reactions
(generally elements) combine and form a compound. (Sometimes these are called synthesis or addition reactions.) reactant + reactant 1 product Basically: A + B AB
Example: 2H2 + O2 2H2O Example: C + O2 CO2
2KCl
Day to day example :When we add water (H2O) to quick lime i.e. calcium oxide (CaO) it reacts vigorously & produces calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) (slaked lime) it releases large amount of energy or heat . Thus this is the reason why the container in which CaO is kept starts boiling as soon as water is added to it. Thus such types of reactions are called exothermic i.e. a reaction in which the heat is given out or liberated . Generally all the combination reactions are exothermic i.e. heat is liberated (given out).
Decomposition reactions occur when a compound breaks up into the elements or in a few to simpler compounds 1 Reactant Product + Product In general: AB A + B Example: 2 H2O 2H2 + O2 Example: 2 HgO 2Hg + O2
It is a type of decomposition reaction which is carried out by the absorption of heat. E.g. :- CaCO3 heat CaO + CO2
It is a type of decomposition reaction which is carried out in presence of sunlight. E.g. :- 2AgCl sunlight 2Ag + Cl2 2AgBr
sunlight
2Ag +Br2
This decomposition of silver bromide is also known as black and white photography.
It is a type of decomposition reaction which is carried in presence of electric current. E.g. :- 2H2O
electric current
2H + O2
This process in which this reaction is carried out is called electrolysis. 2NaCl
electricity
2Na + Cl2
Energyisconservedin chemical reactions. If stronger bonds form in the products than are broken in the reactants, heat is released to the surroundings, and the reaction is termed exothermic. If stronger bonds break than are formed, heat must be absorbed from the surroundings, and the reaction is endothermic. Because strong bonds are more apt to form than weak bonds, spontaneous exothermic reactions are commonfor example, the combustion of carbon-containing fuels with air to give CO2 and H2O, both of which possess strong bonds. Spontaneous endothermic reactions, however, are also well known; the dissolving of salt in water is one example.
