MATHEMATICS TEACHING METHODS AND TECHNIQUES

INQUIRY-DISCOVERY METHOD
Integration of inquiry method and discovery method. In the discovery learning approach, the main content of what is to be learned is not given but must be independently discovered by the students.

INQUIRY-DISCOVERY METHOD
In other words, students have to participate in making many of the decisions about what, how, and when something is to be learned and even plays a major role in making such decisions. Instead of being 'told' the content by the teacher, it is expected that the student will have to explore examples and from them 'discover' the principles or concepts which are to be learned

INQUIRY-DISCOVERY METHOD
Learning by means of this method needs skills such as making comparison and looking for similar characteristics to formulate a certain generalization.

Learning process involved:

Collect related information

Identify the research topic

Plan Strategy for solving the problem

Study & analyze the information

Derive generalization

Teaching Procedures
Identify the research topic Research topic determined by teacher. Introduce the research topic to students. Discuss the aim of research with students.
Plan strategy for problem solution: Predict and formulate hypothesis Determine method and procedure to carry out research through question-answer activity.

Teaching Procedures
Collect relevant information: Collect information by means of observing, measuring, carrying out experiment or finding reference Note down all collected information.

Study and analyze information collected: Tabulate and classify the information collected Analyze and interpret the information.

Teaching Procedures
Derive generalization or conclusion: Derive generalization or conclusion based on the finding from the analysis and interpretation Record the generalization or conclusion.

INQUIRY-DISCOVERY METHOD
In the learning of mathematics, many mathematics concepts, laws, formulae and theorems can be learned through this method.

When planning a discovery lesson, you may refer to the following guidelines:
Identify the concept to be learned and skills that

lead to understanding of that concept. Carefully plan and develop a sequence of questions that should be asked to help your students discover the mathematical concept concerned. Prepare a set of specific examples and arrange them in a progression leading to concept discovery. Make readily available relevant reference materials and equipment for student use.

Useful tips to follow

Never give the answer. Always wait for your students response. Offer frequent feedback. Maintain a climate of acceptance and patience

You may have noticed that discovery learning is basically an inductive approach.
