German Monk, Professor of Theology, and Protestant Reformation Figure

Who is Martin Luther?


Martin Luther was a German Monk that refused the Catholic Churchs monetization of cleansing peoples sins. He came up with the NinetyFive Theses that invoked the Protestant Reformation. He became a monk because he was struck by lightning, afraid of divine judgment and death.

Martin Luther King Jr. who was born four centuries after Martin Luther.

Luthers Early Life


Martin Luther was born to Hans Luther and Margarethe Lindemann on November 10th, 1483. He was baptized to the Roman Catholic Church soon afterwards. Luther had many siblings. His family had high expectations for him and sent him to trivium schools in Mansfeld. There he studied grammar, rhetoric, and logic. When he entered law school, he dropped out immediately.

Though Luther was attracted to theology and philosophy, he was suspicious of it. He had no reason to love God. During July 2nd, 1505, he was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm. This near death experience terrified him of death and judgment from God, thus converting to a monk.

The 95 Theses
Background:
Written by Martin Luther in 1517, the 95 Theses is considered to be the catalyst of the Protestant Reformation. This caused Martin Luther to be excommunicated by Emperor Charles V, after he refused to withdraw his writings.

Teachings The 95 Theses taught that salvation can be :


attained from accepting Jesus Christ as your savior and doing good deeds.
