OUTLINE
After history of breast lumps
and breast examination

The problem is differentiation

OVERVIEW

707 breast cancers have developed.

ARE BENIGN BREAST LESIONS
PREMALIGNANT
From the time a girl begins to menstruate
breasts undergo regular changes each
month.
Nearly all breasts develop some lasting
changes, beginning when the woman is
about 30 years old.
Eventually, about half of all women will
experience symptoms such as lumps, pain,
or nipple discharge.
OVERVIEW

A retrospective study of over
300 referrals

CHANGES/DISEASE

FIBROCYSTIC
CHANGES/DISEASE
Symptoms ;
 swollen, tender breasts, and/or one or
more lumps.
 Frequently, symptoms worsen just
before a woman's menstrual cycle,
subsiding near the end.
 For the majority of women these
symptoms are a temporary discomfort,
however some women experience
severe pain.
ASK ABOUT

 Date of last period?

 When did she discover the lump?
 Family history of breast problems?
 Previous breast problems?
 Previous breast biopsy or other breast surgery?
 Is it hard or soft?
 Has lump and is grown larger or smaller
 Nipple discharge
 Any medications?
Diagnostic Methods

 FNAC /BIOPSY
MANAGEMENT FIBROCYSTIC
CHANGES/DISEASE

SYMPTOMATIC RELIEF
FIBROCYSTIC CHANGES/DISEASE

 Re-assurance
 Analgesics
 Sedatives
 dietary changeseliminating all forms
of cafeine-containing foods from
your diet.

 Decrease sources of estrogen from
diet such as commercially raised meats
which contain excessive amounts of
hormones that can exasperate your
symptoms.
 Stop pharmaceutical sources of
estrogen such as birth control pills that
can worsen symptoms of benign breast
conditions.
About Premenopause
 Progesterone Cream

 Vitamin E- 400 IU to 600 IU per day
 Vitamin B6, a B complex, and
magnesium.
 wearing a good support bra during
intolerable episodes.
Sclerosing adenosis

involves the excessive growth of tissues in the

breast"s lobules.
frequently causes breast pain.
Changes are microscopic.
adenosis can produce lumps,
On mammography, often as calcifications, small
deposits of calcium in tissue.
Because adenosis is often difficult to distinguish
from cancer, -- surgical biopsy to diagnose and
treat .
FIBROADENOMAS

FIBROADENOMAS
 Fibro Adenomas do not become
malignant
 they can enlarge with pregnancy
and breast-feeding.
 Fibro adenomas have a typically
benign appearance on
mammography (breast x-rays)
 diagnosed with fine-needle
aspiration.
 Most believe that remove fibro
Fat necrosis
 Firm, tender, indurated, ill-defined mass
 Formed by damaged and disintegrating
fatty tissues.
 Typically occurs in obese women with
very large breasts.
 Often develops in response to a bruise
or blow to the breast, even though the
woman may not remember the specific
injury.
 Can easily be mistaken for cancer, so
such lumps are removed during a
surgical biopsy.
Breast lumps in males

After history
of breast lumps and breast examination
the problem is differentiation

 Physiological swelling and tenderness

 Nodularity
Conclusions

women with fibrocystic breast

disease or other benign breast
conditions are more likely to
develop breast cancer later
only
if a breast biopsy shows "atypia"
or abnormal breast cells.
Conclusions
 Risk factors for breast cancer after the
diagnosis of benign breast disease
include the histologic classification
of a benign breast lesion and a
family history of breast cancer.
 However, all breasts lumps must be
investigated to rule out breast cancer
and/or to begin immediate treatment if
breast cancer is diagnosed.
