Understanding Page Definitions Creating New Page Definitions

Page Definitions
Defining pages is the first step in the user interface phase of development. As this diagram illustrates, the data design phase is complete and you are ready to connect the data to the user:

Understanding Page Definitions

Building the page definition is the first part of creating the user interface. You have almost complete control over the appearance of the window when you build the page definition.

Page Definitions Page Control Properties

Setting page control properties involves opening the dialog box for each page control and configuring each tab of the dialog box according to the technical specifications.

Use the Record tab properties to determine: The table and field to which this page control writes. The size of the page control. Alignment of the page control. Other display options.

After you add page controls, you must set the record, label, use, and general properties of each field. To set the page control properties:
1. Double-click the page control. 2. Set the Record properties. 3. Select each tab, and set the appropriate properties based on the specifications.

Page Definitions Related Fields Sometimes additional information is necessary on the page, although it may not be in the base table. You display this information in a related field. Example Description of Department on the Job Data Page.

Page Definitions Creating Grids Grids also group levels of data on a page, but their layout is less flexible than that of scroll areas. As the name implies, grids appear as rows and columns of data.

Page Definitions Creating Grids

Grids offer built-in features that are not available in scroll areas:
You can sort columns by clicking the column heading. You can export grid data to a spreadsheet in XLS format by clicking the spreadsheet icon. Grids are customizable by user ID. You can create your own settings, such as customized tab order, on a grid. These customizations are saved by user ID.

Page Definitions Create a Grid To create a grid, you insert a grid and then drag fields into it. You can drag the fields in either direction to place them as necessary.

Page Definitions Page Order Although the page is visually correct, it is the page order, not the page layout, that determines tabbing sequence or flow from field to field. The page order also determines the processing logic for the page. Click the Order tab to see the page order.

Page Definitions
Page Definitions Page Order Rules Level holders (scroll areas and grids) come before level content. Radio buttons for the same field must be grouped together. A display control field comes before its associated related field. Normally, control and related fields immediately follow one another. With the exception of level zero, all levels are contained within scroll areas or grids.
