Materials Development as a Practical Undertaking

Learning/teaching material, in practice can be developed/produced by evaluating learning materials, adapting, supplementing and creating own materials (Pinter 2006)

Evaluating materials a. Observe In Line with Syllabus and Curriculum Well design textbook b. Exploring teachers and learners experiences and opinions The most effective way Can not be valid

Make decision

2. Adapting Based on different criteria Adapting does not always work well 3. Supplementing 4. Creating own materials

DEVELOPING LEARNING MATERIALS FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES

The learners need

Learners need can be identified by the teachers through

learning objectives. These learning objectives can be made more specific in the form of syllabus. There are at least 8 types of syllabus : 1. topic syllabus 2. structural/situational syllabus 3. Functional/notional syllabus 4. skills syllabus 5. skills and strategies syllabus

1. In a language centered approached, there are 5

steps to follow : a. Analyzing target situation b. Writing syllabus c. Writing/selecting texts to illustrate items in syllabus d. Devising tests for assessing knowledge of the items in the syllabus

2. In a skills centered approached, there are 6 steps to follow :

a. Analyzing target needs b. Selecting interesting and representative texts c. Devising a hierarchy of skills to exploit the texts d. Ordering and adapting the texts as necessary to enable a focus on the required skills e. Devising activities/techniques to teach those skills f. Devising a system to assess the acquisition of the skills

3.

In a learning centered approached, there are 3 chains of procedures : a. Analyzing learning situation, creating interesting and enjoyable materials and checking language and skills content of materials and making necessary adjustments b. Analyzing target situations, establishing general syllabus of topics and tasks, creating interesting and enjoyable materials, and checking language and skills content of materials and making necessary adjustments c. Analyzing target situations, establishing general syllabus of topics and tasks, producing detailed language/skills syllabus, and checking language and skills content of materials and making necessary adjustments

In concerning the nature of the learning material :

a. The teacher has to be able to differentiate the materials for the content and language. b. The teacher can add/modify the existing materials for learners understanding.

In dealing with the principles of developing learning

materials: a. The teacher has to consider when he develops learning materials b. The teacher can apply any one or more principles of developing materials. c. The teacher can develop various materials.

The procedure of developing learning materials consist of: 1. Design 2. Implementation 3. Evaluation
