KALPATARU POWER TRANSMISSION LIMITED

INDIA

SYSNOPSIS

OF

765 KV
KOTESHWAR TRANSMISSION SYSTEM
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Koteshwar & Tehri are two hydro
electric generation plants in the state of
Uttaranchal in the northern part of India.

Installed capacities of these are 400 MW

& 2000 MW (1000MW in two phases)
respectively.
Tehri is already generating power &
two lines are carrying power at 400
KV from Tehri in state of Uttaranchal
to Meerut in state of Uttar Pradesh.
Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd awarded the work
of constructing the lines,
400 KV lines (Triple Snowbird) from
existing lines to Pooling Substation.

765 KV lines (Quad Bersimis) from

Pooling Substation to existing lines to
Meerut substation.

to Kalpataru Power as no other EPC Contractors came

forward to carry out this work owing to the difficulties
involved
 In the new system; there would be a
Pooling Sub station to receive power from
all two hydel plants at 400 KV. For this
purpose, existing Tehri – Meerut S/C lines
will be separately tapped and a D/C 400
KV line will be brought to the Pooling Sub
station. This will have a Triple Bundle
Snow Bird conductor.
The line from the Koteshwar hydel will be a
Double Circuit line using Twin Bundle ACSR
conductor. The voltage will be stepped up to
765\ KV at the Pooling Sub station and two
nos.

S/C lines will feed power to Meerut Sub

station at 765 KV. Finally, the portion of the
lines between 400 KV Tapping Points and 765
Reentry Points will be dismantled.
Apart from having to work in hostile
terrain, forest inclement weather,
securing ROW along line routes also
has been a major problem right from
the beginning our project staff along
with client’s field officer’s has to work
hard to achieve the progress.
All the lines to be erected in this project
traverse through the Himalayan ranges at
altitudes varying from 1500 – 2000 mts
above MSL.

Ambient temperature along the line routes

0 0
range from 0 C – 20 C and occasionally
0
dipping below 0 C at upper reaches.
With all towers being of tension type
reinforcing the hostile nature of the terrain;
at most of the locations constructions
consumables have to be carried by mules /
donkeys or manually head loaded up or
down steep gradients.

Inclemency of the weather restricts the

working period to only about 5(five)
months in a year.

In spite of all the hurdles &
difficulties; all 59 foundations of the
400 KV Tapping lines -23 (Triple
Snow Bird) and the two single
circuits of 765 KV reentry lines -36
(Quad Bersimis) have been
completed.
For tower erection, we have achieved a
total of 40 nos. for both 765 KV & 400 KV;
erecting 11 nos. towers of 400 KV Triple
Snowbird Line & 29 Nos. in 765 KV Quad
Bersimis Line. It would be worth
mentioning that; for 10 nos. 400 KV S/C
towers with Snow Bird conductor; 765 KV
S/C towers are being used to ensure safety
of the towers in this terrain.
Quantum of works already carried out would be worth a mention;

Conductor Under Rough Sag
Looking at the terrain through which
the lines traverse one would
appreciate under what difficult
condition our teams had to work to
achieve this progress.
Out of 36 locations at the two 765 KV S/C
lines; 2 locations have 6 Mtr Unequal Leg
Extensions While 28 have 3 Mtr. Unequal
Leg Extensions and out of 23 locations at
400 KV lines the corresponding figures are
2 & 20 respectively, making the excavation
work that much difficult.
As in the case for foundation works where
we had all workers & supervisory staff
medically tested & certified fit for high
altitude working, we put our erection teams
through the same procedure. Only, for
erection teams they had to be fit for
working in high winds and cold weather
conditions as well. Our boys have come
through successfully once again for the
umpteenth time.
Stringing is more a specialized activity in this
type of terrain. All towers being of tension
types make all the sections as single span.
This would mean all conductors need to be
measured & cut at nearest store point and
then head loaded through meandering hill
tracks. Our team is doing just that & under all
these difficult conditions have achieved a
progress of 7.500 KM.
Amongst all these eagerness to achieve &
further improve upon the output; safety has
been at the forefront of our concern. With all
our teams working at this type of
treacherous terrain & inclement weather
conditions not a single member of our teams
– foundation, erection & stringing, not a
single person suffered any injury.
