What is sports?
Sport is generally recognized as activities which are based in physical athleticism. Sports are usually governed by a set of rules or customs, which serve to ensure fair competition, and allow consistent adjudication of the winner.

Before Independence After Independence
In the vedic era : In early India, games and sports were very much concerned about the development of the physique and for the art of offence and defence. The gurushishya (teacher-pupil) relationship has always been an integral part of Indian sport from time immemorial. Indian sport reached a peak of excellence when Buddhism held sway here.
After the IX Asian Games in New Delhi in 1982, the capital city now has modern sports facilities. India has hosted or co-hosted several international sporting events, such as the 1951 and the 1982 Asian Games, the 1987 and 1996 Cricket World Cup, the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, the 2010 Hockey World Cup and the 2010 Commonwealth Games The country hosted the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the first Indian Grand Prix in 2011.

POPULAR SPORTS IN INDIA

HOCKEY
Field hockey is the official national sport in India. Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) was formed on the 7th November, 1925 at Gwalior. In Olympics, India has won the hockey title a maximum of 8 times. The first World Cup Hockey was played in Barcelona in 1971. In India, Dhyan Chand has rated as best hockey player of all times.

FOOTBALL
Football is one of India's most popular sports, next to cricket . Traditionally it has enjoyed popularity in the states West Bengal, Goa, Kerala and the entire North-East India, especially Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Sikkim. Today India's top domestic league, the I-League, is one of the most popular sports league in the India, and is home to some of India's most famous football clubs like East bengal, Mohan Bagan, Salgaocar, and Dempo Santosh Trophy is an annual Indian football tournament which is contested by states , Bengal has won 31 times.

CRICKET
In India Cricket was introduced by British royalty. Parsee community of India was the first to take part in Cricket in 1848. Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (INDIA), the youngest ever test captain, and a very fine batsman played for a long time with a glass eye. The India national cricket team won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, 2011 Cricket World Cup.

Traditional and regional sports

Gilli-danda Young boys playing Gilli-danda, a traditional Indian sport. Gilli-danda is a sport played by using one small stick (gilli) and a large stick (danda) like cricket with ball being replaced by gilli. It is still played in villages of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra states of India only as a recreational sport among boys. Kancha Kancha is played by using marbles, popular in cities as well as villages by small boys only as a gully sport. The winner gets the kancha of other boys. Kite flying Kite flying is played by many people in India in cities as well as villages. The festival of Makar Sankranti is marked with competitions of this sport.

Other popular regional sports Indian martial arts Other regional sports and games namely air sports, atya patya, bridge, carrom, cycle polo, fencing, gymnastics, judo, karate, Gatka, kho-kho, mallakhamb, roller skating, rowing, shooting ball, soft tennis, squash, swimming, taekwondo, ten-pin bowling, tennikoit, tug of war, and yachting have dedicated following and their own national sports federations.
