Information derived from this interview: a) Career Background He made personal statement regarding himself which he stated that retirement was never in his mind at all because he is passionate about machine and business management. He had 20 years of experience in engineering industry. b) Financial management problem

As for the background of the company, during start-up phase, the company scale up rapidly however there is no cash flow forecasting to develop sustainable and profitable business.

They took up one year to discover certain customers debt was not paid up. Debt recovery was a painful effort for them especially when they realized more customers did not pay up on time. Tools, equipment and facilities are bought in ad hoc basis.

c) Business Strategies -Since company couldnt afford to employ salesman as it was not cost effective for a small enterprise, therefore he utilized existing clients of the company to spread their company name through word of mouth. -Build trust culture among employees and clients through open communication policy. Employees are able to channel their dissatisfaction to him personally.

d) Definition of successful business


Corporate game is a game design by the Western countries, however this is not the case for Asian countries. Thus he did not plan to have the company being public listed as being a private company does not mean it does make lower profits than public listed company. e) Future planning He plans to implement retirement benefit for the workers which pay base on productivity. Workers will have life insurance. Currently, supervisor level have medical card, and all worker have accidental insurance.

f) Employment plan He told us that the first criterion of recruitment is loyalty of the employee towards the company. This is because loyalty enables the company to plan and expand their business activity in long term and at the same time allows the company to plan in financial aspect for the workers.

g) Corporate Responsibility
He promotes recycling of papers in the company which the staff are prohibited to throw papers into dustbin.

h) Intellectual Property
He mentioned that he did not believe in the intellectual property right and every businessman has their own strategies.

Second Visit - Observation


This visit is on 16 March 2013. Below are the information and issues derived from this visit. Company Information

a) business activities( main and subsidiary)

b) Manpower 10 locals and 8 foreigners. As to the local workers, four of them are from Sabah and five of them are engineers Foreign manpower holds no qualification ranging from skillful to semi-skillful. c) Working time Workers work both on weekend and weekday. Below are the working time. Weekday 8.30am to 5.30pm Weekend 8.30am to 4.30pm d) Intellectual Property We were told by the manager that no any patent application to the relevant authority for all machine designs made by them. However, they insert the companys trademark on every nut and bolt of the machines and every designing software programme is secured by password.

Observation of Workplace Issues a) Safety

Tools are not properly arranged, fragmented glasses are scattered all around the welding floor and most of the workers do not wear any safety boots. b) Hygiene

Toilet is dirty and smelly and the factory is dusty.


c) Facilities

Pantry and wifi connection are provided. However, no praying room for Muslim. This indirectly cause inconvenience for Muslim workers.
