Objectives: To enhance the Senior Engineers awareness on the effects and troubles of machinery on deteriorated lube oil quality.

. To be familiar with the different NYK manuals and guidelines relating to Lube Oil Management.

To be able to identify counter measures in preventing machinery damage/failure due to deterioration of lube oil quality.
Rev 3.0 01/12/2010

Introduction The cost of lubricants are highly expensive. However, the loss to be incurred by the ship owner, which is economically pervasive, is the amount of repair of a serious machinery breakdown and the loss in the operation of the vessel that occurs due to the effect of deteriorated lube oil. It is the task of the shipboard engineers with the use of proper engine management to monitor, assess and treat the quality of lubrication oil that will prevent certain damage to the machinery.

Lube Oil Analysis

Accurately monitor and assess the condition of the lubricating oil, the engine lubricated part and the proper treatment required.
Follow the procedures stipulated in the Safety Management System Manual.

Spot Test Results

Good Little contaminants

Indicate date and name of Lube Oil and keep this as records.

Indication of Spot Test Results for Lube Oil:

A colorless spot or a slight yellow outer ring "good" oil. A dense, dark deposit zone - Dispersancy failure A black, pasty zone - Glycol (Antifreeze) in your oil A dark center with distinct outer ring - Severely oxidized oil A dark center with surrounding rings - Fuel in oil

Shore Analysis
Lube Oil Sample should be sent to designated laboratories every 3 months or as necessary for analysis.
Taking sample

Always Follow NYK SMS Manual Procedures and other related Company instructions.

1.Capacity:more than 450cc 2. Make space in the bottle due to uniformity the sample oil before start analysis. 3. Sampling point is always same.
