Here’s some of my work

All these designs have one thing

in common
They all required me to make a decision
about whether my design
would be a good one
for the people
who would live in and use my design

If the front facade is the ‘front’ because
it faces a public
street -

What should the inside of a house look like ?

Some Developer Housing
The developer hires you
tells you what he wants.

He’ll talk about the MARKET for the housing

And specify the number of units and their sizes
You’ll ask him about the people,
the future resident,
how they live and what they like and dislike.

He’ll tell you they are like such and such.

He’ll talk in generalities.
How can you make sure that what the
developer knows is correct?
The Unknown User
How do you know when. your design
is the one your users will
want
When you are not certain who you are designing for.
An excellent source
Of knowledge about an unknown user - the future resident -
is to talk with someone who knows them.

Talk with a real estate sales person

That’s what I do
Ask them to tell you what your ‘market’
likes and dislikes about house, a unit.
Find out what they like & dislike
Go to a new development and visit a display house –
or a unit

Look at its architectural characteristics

Outside & Inside
You should look at WHAT goes

WHERE, its

SIZE, and its

QUALITIES
You will know more about
what will make a successful design
than your developer.
It will give you confidence in making design
decisions.

I liked this plan a lot.
But, I wondered if the low income people
– my real clients - would like it?
To be sure,
I asked them
Kitchen
to the back
Living Room
to the front

This is the plan they wanted.

There is a significant symbolic difference
in meanings
between the front and the back of
houses – of all buildings.
What does the ‘front’ of a building mean?
