Styles: Popular Music Genres

Britney Spears Toxic represents popular music genres because the video has lots of costume changes, sex appeal, special effects, dancing and a big budget.
The reason for this is because she is on a major record label which will give her and the music video a bigger budget to work with. The genre of the video usually reflects on the genre of the song which creates a good match.

Styles: In-concert and as live footage

Blessthefall The Reign represents inconcert and as live footage because the video shows them playing live performances throughout. Videos that are like this are usually actual concert footage or filmed like it was a real concert and are usually on independent labels. In-concert and as live footage music videos are a good way to show the audience what the artist is like live.

Styles: Animation - stop motion & digital

Gorrilaz Clint Eastwood represents animation because the whole video is digitally animated. The bands music videos are all usually animated throughout.

Animated videos can appeal to anybody but usually the younger audiences would like them more
No matter whether it is stop motion or digital, a video which is partly or wholly animated fall under the heading of animation.

Usually the videos show the artist being a narrator throughout the video.
These videos would appeal to younger audiences.

R Kelly Trapped in the closet represents the narrative style because the video has a story in which the viewers can follow whilst listening to the song. Narrative videos usually show a message or meaning for the audience understand. Narrative videos can be very helpful if the artist is trying to promote a message through the video.

Styles: Surrealist
Suicide Silence Wake Up represents surrealist videos because it shows someone who is meant to be on a drug trip so there are psychedelic colours and shaking shapes, this videos could be described as absurd. I think the main audience for surreal videos would be young adults because they may understand the meaning behind the video. Some surrealist videos are creative although they are very different.

Weird Al Yankovic Smells Like Nirvana would represent the pastiche style because of how they imitate the video of the song that inspired his parody. Pastiche videos could appeal to all audiences but mainly older audiences.

Styles: Referencing
Linkin Park New Divide would represent referencing videos because the video has the band playing as well as little clips from the movie Transformers (Bay, 2007) which this song is a soundtrack for the movie Referencing videos sometimes reference other subjects, events or an individual person, however soundtrack videos most likely will have references to the film it is a soundtrack for.

Styles: Homage
Thirty Seconds To Mars The Kill would be a great representation of a homage music video because it uses various themes and locations from the classic horror film The Shining (Kubrick, 1980).

Homage music videos are created by using texts that influence or catch the eye of a artist.
In this instance Thirty Seconds To Mars may really enjoy the film, The Shining (Kubrick, 1980) , thus choosing to recreate it for their video.

Styles: Influence of commercials

Beyonce & Lady Gaga Telephone would represent the influence of commercials style because there are many product placements within the video showcasing all different brands Influence of commercials are generally when a music video is shot like an advertisement for TV or has many products obviously placed in the video.

Conventions: Lyric interpretation

Lyric interpretation is where the viewer deciphers the words of the song along with the visuals. However, it is also the way in which the director uses the lyrics to his advantage by creating a music video representing some of those lyrics. A good example for lyric interpretation would be Linkin Park Numb

Conventions: Extending songs meaning

Extending the songs meaning is where we create a bigger image of the meaning behind the song by reading the lyrics and see how the lyrics then match the video. This is a good way to promote a message throughout the music video

A good example of this would be Skrillex First Of The Year. The reason for this is that you could think the man is a pedophile taking the girl downstairs into the basement

Conventions: Consolidating songs meaning

When consolidating the songs meaning we narrow down the meaning and join the images and song in the video together to make the meaning of the song. This is good for promoting meaning so that the audience can understand it straight away. Michael Jackson Earth Song is a good example because it shows the world being destroyed around him, promoting to stop destroying the planet.

Conventions: Allusion
Allusion is where you reference an existing text, person, place or event which has happened. If the allusion is that discreet the only person who may actually get the reference would be the producer of the video.

An example of allusion is Weezer Pork and Beans. This video references all the video which are shown on the internet.

Conventions: Links to other artists

Sometimes music video may be linked to other artists through references. There are several ways in which this happens but the main two are through parody or homage. Usually when an artist links it to another artist they like that original artists style or song. An example of this would be Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger

Techniques: Cutting to a beat

Cutting to a beat technique is where you match up the shots you have to the beat of the song, this can be used to show rhythm in the music video but also creativity.
Cutting to a beat is a good technique and is used in most videos A good example would be Nicola Roberts Beat Of My Drum

Techniques: Effects
Aesthetically pleasing visual effects are used for many reasons, one of which is to make the video look completely different to bring in more of an audience. However you may attract a different audience with the effects you use. The effects in which are used in videos usually suit the genre the music is. Bring Me The Horizon Shadow Moses is a good example for a video using effects because it is filmed by two cameras and keeps switching like a glitch effect

Techniques: Miming and lip sync

With miming and lip syncing there would be separate tracks, one would be capturing the video of the as-live performance but then the audio track will be removed from this video and replaced with the actual song the artist is singing
An example of miming and lip syncing would be Asking Alexandria - Breathless

Techniques: Playback and lip sync

Playback and lip sync is where the artist lip syncs with separate audio and visuals and then the speed can be changed for various effects such as slow motion around the artist even though they are lip syncing in time with the song. This is a good technique to use when you want effects like having slow motion footage but the normal speed song. An example of this would be Rebecca Black - Friday

Techniques: Multi-image
Multi-image is where many images are shown on the screen at the same time, some images can be changed fast and frequent to create, in a sense, a panorama. However split screen is not multi image but it is the more modern and more efficient way of creating multiple images on the screen at once. An example of this would be Eminem Without Me

Techniques: Camera Movements

Camera movements is where various camera movements are used to show different things such as a pan to show a car moving or a close up to show emotion

An example of camera movements would be Next Chapter Lost Poet

Techniques: Camera angles and shot types

Using various shot angles, the director could create hidden meaning or tone to the video or try to create a character the song relates to. For example a low angle could show the importance of a character in the video.

An example of a music video which has different angles and shot types would be The Word Alive Life Cycles

Techniques: Chroma key

Chroma key is where the footage is shot in front of a green screen and then the unwanted background is removed and then can be replaced with another image or video

Chroma keying is really useful when using green or blue screens because it keeps the part you want clear and does not have rough edges. An example of chroma key would be Bring Me The Horizon It Never Ends.

Zac,
Well done for covering all the terms. I am really disappointed however, that you have copied so much; not only are the majority of examples copied, but a substantial amount of the text is too. You need to make these changes before I give you a grade I will not grade plagiarised work.
