DEFINITION OF VALUE IN MATHEMATICS

Value in mathematics education are the deep affective qualities that education fosters through the school subject of mathematics.

THE EXAMPLES OF VALUE IN TEACHING & LEARNING OF PRIMARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS

Dicipline in doing the calculation and following the right methods and steps. Neat and introspective neat in presenting the calculation. Fast thinking and acting try to solve the problem in time. Making the right decision Creative thinking

Dare to explore dare to explore the problems and the new things (trying to solve by using their own methods). Honesty and good behavior does not cheating during examination. Logical and rationalism (it is not the concrete world that is logic, but it is the explanation that are. Friendship and cooperation ( by doing group activities)

Creative thinking Aware of the situations Understand the concept and apply it in daily life Discipline by doing the calculation step by step Neat in presenting the calculation

VALUES OF MATHEMATICS IN TEACHING & LEARNING

Rationalism
Promotes universalist thinking This value is demostrated by :
Teachers developing students practical skills argument and logical reasoning. Encouraging discussion and debate

Empiricism
Promotes materialism and determinism. This value is demonstrated by :
Teachers developing students practical skills. Students and teachers creating symbols, models, diagram etc.

Control
Promotes security in knowledge and the ability to predict. This value is demonstrated by :
Teachers demonstrating how mathematical and scientific ideas explain and predict events. Teachers developing students skills at drill and routines

Progress
Promotes the value of individual liberty and creativity This value is demonstrated by :
Teachers developing students creative imaginations. Encouraging alternative explanations.

Openness
Verifications of hypotheses, clear articulation and critical thinking are also significant as is the transparency of procedures and assumptions. This value is demonstrated by :
Teachers developing students skills at articulating their ideas Teaching the criteria of proving and verifying. Promotion freedom of expression.

Mystery
Promotes thinking about the origins and nature of knowledge and of the creative process as well as the abstractness and dehumanized nature of scientific and mathematical knowledge. This value is demonstrated by :
Teachers developing students imagination. Stimulating wonder and awe with significant ideas. Exploring mathematical puzzles. (SUDOKU)
