Bolt Tensioning, Torquing and Tightening

Specification Requirements

Tensioning The following bolted flanged connections shall be installed using bolt tensioners: a. Class 900, NPS 12 and larger, service above 500F. b. Class 1500, NPS 8 and larger c. Class 2500, NPS 4 and larger

Specification Requirements

Torquing Use a controlled torquing (hydraullic or manual) to tighten NPS 6 and larger, class 600 and heavier flanges

Gasket Check

Before begining the tensioning is necesary check proper gasket installation, proper rating gasket, and proper material gasket according to fabrication drawing. The next table show the color code for spiral gasket from ASME B16.20 Metallic gasket for pipe flanges

Flange Bolt Tightening Sequence

The gasket must line up evenly with the inside bore of the flange face with no portion of it extending into the bore. When tightening the bolts the flange faces mus be kept paralell and the bolts tightened uniformly. The secuence is to lightly tighten the first bolt then move directly across the circle for the second bolt, the move way around the circle for the third and directly across for the fourth, continuing the sequence until all are tightened. Do not snug up bolts on the first go-around. This can tilt the flanges out of parallel. Set wrench at about final torque for first go around.
