In 2011, Male OFWs accounted for 52.2% of the total OFWs in 2011. Meanwhile, female OFWs accounted for 47.8%.

Female OFWs in 2011 were generally younger than males. Around 63.1% female OFWs were aged 15-34 years while only 48.5% male OFWs are of the same age group.

Highest concentration of male workers are in the Production and related works and Transport and Equipment Operation sector (97,631 males as opposed to 23,016 females) Highest concentration of female workers are in the Service sector (135,168 females as opposed to 19,367 males) There are more number of male professionals working abroad than female professionals, with the exception of the Nursing Professionals with 10,524 females as opposed to 1,828 males.

Illegal Recruitment and Trafficking of Persons


In 2010, there were 1,648 reported cases of illegal recruitment.
A significant number of Filipino men and women who migrate abroad for work are subjected to conditions of involuntary servitude worldwide. Men, women, and children are subjected to conditions of forced labor in factories, at construction sites, on fishing vessels, on agricultural plantations, and as domestic workers in Asia and increasingly throughout the Middle East. Skilled Filipino migrant workers, such as engineers and nurses, are also subjected to conditions of forced labor abroad.

Illegal Recruitment and Trafficking of Persons


The Philippines achieved its first labor trafficking conviction only last 2011. US State Department Report: Prosecutors continue to have difficulty distinguishing labor trafficking crimes from labor contract violations, which may be one cause for the lack of a greater number of criminal forced labor cases filed.
