Best Practice Guide for Video in Hotel Deployment

Best Practice Guide for Video

Application: Deployment of Video (Multicast or VoD) over Wi-Fi in Hotel environment Equipment:
ZoneDirectors ZoneFlex 7962, 7363 Dual Band Access Point MediaFlex 7111 Adapters

Basic Configuration:
Dedicate common SSID for data (2.4 GHz) Dedicate AP unique SSID for video (5 GHz)

Configurations to optimize video

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Turn off background scanning Channel Management Separate SSIDs to segment the 7111s On 7111 turn off Adapter Management Self Configure For the multiple 7111s that are connected to a 7962, the one with the slowest zap throughput is the throughput you should estimate to get (being conservative). 6. Change Directed Broadcast Threshold to a value larger than the number of maximum client associated to the AP 7. Disable Mesh 8. For larger # of Adapter configuration, you can use the Quickconfig Adapter Script that we have created

Turn off background scanning

Recommendation is to TURN OFF background scanning With background scanning ON, the AP will go away and scan every 20 seconds for a period of 30 msec. During this period, there is a potential of video disturbance Current software release locks the background scanning of 5 & 2.4 GHz option together. Turning off background scanning disables on both frequencies

5 GHz Channel Management

Manual Channel Selection
With automatic channel selection, the video can be interrupted during channel optimization If possible, use one of the higher powered channels (country dependent)
US: 149 or higher (until 5 GHz DFS is approved) EU: 100 or higher

40 MHz Channel
For proper video distribution, we recommend that you allocate 40 MHz for each channel. The 5 GHz band has sufficient number of channels for re-use even in the case of 40 MHz setting

149

Separate SSIDs to segment the 7111s

Use different SSIDs amongst APs to statically map different 7111s to the desired AP. Different SSIDs between floors Different SSIDs between different areas of the deployment

Throughput Estimate and Streams calculations

For multiple 7111s that are connected to a 7962, the one with the slowest zap throughput is the throughput you should estimate to get (being conservative). Estimate the overall supported throughput by running zap and find the 99.5% tile Calculate the number of supported video streams by:

# of Video Streams = Overall supported throughput / (bandwidth per video stream)

Typically 3 -4 Mbps for SD & 8 12 Mbps for HD

Use 40-60 Mbps as rule of thumb for overall supported Video Throughput

Turn off Adapter Management on 7111

Adapter Management is used to provide auto-provisioning capability (to 7811) Turning off this feature will allow the user to individually configure the 7111 to the specific SSID

Disable Mesh
Under most scenario, we should disable Mesh, as it reduces the bandwidth and also the Mesh topology changes can potentially cause video disruptions Root AP performs periodic scanning

10

Tune Directed Broadcast Threshold

Change Directed Broadcast Threshold to a value larger than the number of maximum client associated to the AP

Configuration (for increasing threshold to 10) In a standalone AP

set directed-thr wlanX 10 for each WLAN

In a ZoneFlex environment where the Zone Director is managing APs

enter the ZD CLI command: set_qos wlan <wlan-ssid> directed-threshold 10 for each WLAN.

11

Use Quick Configuration Adapter Script

For larger # of Adapter configuration, you can use the Quick-config Adapter Script The script provides the following automated configuration steps:
Login to 7111 on 192.168.2.254 Turn off Link Management Turn on dhcp client Program ssid Program wpa key Program country code Change device username and password
