ABSTRACT
This project deals with the design and fabrication of screw jack. A screw jack is a device used to lift heavy loads with less effort i.e., minimum effort with maximum Mechanical advantage. The main parts of the screw jack are screw, nut and a stand for support. The working of the screw jack is to convert rotary motion into linear motion.

Mechanics of Power Screws

A power screw is a device that is common to tools or machinery that are used to change rotary motion into translation. It is also capable of developing a large amount of mechanical advantage. Familiar applications include clamps or vices, presses, lathes lead screws, and jacks.

Screw jack Types

They are available in two basic varieties, Electric jacks and worm gear screw jacks. Another type of jack design, based on hydraulic principles, is primarily used in industrial and manufacturing facilities and does not operate like a screw jack.

Types of threads

Square Thread
The SQUARE THREAD is generally used where strength, low friction and wear resistance make it worthwhile. Square threads are used in vices and presses, as well as in screw jacks. More difficult to machine than a ACME & BUTTRESS threads

DESIGN OBJECTIVES

Specify design considerations such as factor of safety, material selection criteria, and etc. To study effects of stresses on the power screw parts 1.Direct tensile or compressive stress due to axial load 2.Torsional shear stress in the minimum cross section of the screw by the twisting moment

3 Shear stress due to axial load . 4.Bearing pressure at the thread surfaces of the screw and nut. To determine the torque required to raise or lower the given load. To determine the efficiency of the power screw To determine the dimensions of the different parts of the screw.

Square Thread Screw Torque

The torque required to raise the load W is

Traise

+ tan = W rm 1 tan

rm

Lead

and to lower the load, we flip two signs:

Tlower

tan = W rm 1 + tan

Buckling of the screw

Factor of safety = P(critical) P(working )

P(critical) = 519.62 = 98.1 KN The critical load is more than the load at which the screw is designed (i.e. 19.62 103 N) Therefore there is a no chance of the screw to buckle

System Efficiency

T0 = PTan dMean/ 2 mm

= 15607.71 N-mm Ttotal = 32676.9 N

Efficiency = 47.76% If the screw friction and collar is friction is neglected, the efficiency of the system is calculated as below: Efficiency = = 48.0%

Conclusion
Design of screw jack is carried out to lift a maximum load of 2 tons. Theoretical calculations is done and based on those design parameters the screw jack is fabricated. The fabricated screw jack is tested by lifting a bus.

FUTURE SCOPE
The project was done completely through mechanical path but in near future analysis and design optimization can be done to check whether it is withstanding much higher loads using some FEA package like ANSYS to minimize work and time to get better advanced model.
