Themes in the story (Chapters 1-4)

No good is entirely good
The members of the Guppee army, or Library are dressed as Pages with stories written on them. The stories have been changed by Batcheat Symbolizes the fact that even the nicest leaders contain the desire to change a legends meaning for their own benefit.

Themes
Concept of truth.
This is shown in Chapter 1, when Haroun loses his temper with his father and says to him, "What's the use of stories that aren't even true?" This brings Rashid away from his magical worlds and causes to him to lose the Gift of the Gab. This tells us that we must be realistic. This theme is also shown in Chapters 2 and 3, when Haroun and Rashid are escorted to the Arabian Nights Plus One. The Dull Lake was affected by their moods and changed accordingly. Haroun is reminded of one of Rashid's stories, the Moody Land, which changes according to the people's emotions. This is magical realism.

This was also shown in Chapter 4, when Haroun realises that the Ocean is poisoned. Pollution is a very real problem in this world too.

Themes
Darkness is not always evil. (Especially when it comes to Mudra)
- Gup and Chup fall at extreme ends of a spectrum of speech

- Does not fall at extreme ends of a spetrum of good and evil

- Factors such as manipulation of stories and the secrecy of the Walrus will put a sent to the reputation that Gup is good.
