Abrasive Jet Machining (AJM)

Presented by-: Manish kumar ME (3rd year)

What is AJM?

Components of AJM-:

Abrasive Delivering System Control System Pump Nozzle Motion system

Abrasive Delivery System-:

Control System-:

Pump-:

Intensifier pumps

Crank shaft pumps

Nozzles-:

Motion system-:
In order to make precision parts , an abrasive jet system must have a precision X-Y table and motion control system. Tables fall into three general categories:

Floor-mounted gantry system with separate cutting tables Integrated table/gantry system Floor-mounted cantilever systems with separate cutting tables

Floor-mounted gantry system with separate cutting tables-:

Integrated table/gantry system-:

Floor-mounted cantilever systems with separate cutting tables-:

Working of AJM-:

Features of AJM-:

Obtainable tolerances Material to machine Material thickness Accuracy of table Stability of table Control of the abrasive jet

Machining aspects-:

Around curves Inside corners Feed rate Acceleration Nozzle focus Speed of cutting Active taper compensation Kerfs width Consistency of pump pressure

Factors that determines the cutting speed-:

Material being cut (and how thick it is) Hardness Thickness Geometry of part Desired result Software controlling the motion Power of the nozzle Type of abrasive Quality of abrasive

Comparison to other processes-:

Comparison with EDM (Electric discharge machining) Comparison with Laser Machining Comparison with Milling

Machinable material-:
Virtually any material can be cut by using AJM method i.e. harder material like titanium to steel aluminum, steel , titanium laminates, flammable materials cut thin stuff, or thick stuff, brittle materials like glass, ceramics quartz, stone etc.

Process advantages-:

Extremely fast setup and programming Very little fixturing for most parts Very low side forces during machining Almost no heat generated on your parts No start hole required Machine thick stuff Environmentally friendly Your clippings are valuable there is only one tool

Process limitations-:

Short life of an expansive wear part: the mixing tube Occasional plugging of mixing tube

Wear, misalignment, and damage of jewel.

Conclusion-:

The better performance, and the applications presented above statements confirm that ABRASIVE JET MACHINING (AJM) will continue to expand. From operator experiences the abrasive jets are capable of anywhere from 0.5mm-0.025mm precision. Newer machines are capable of 3D machining thus making it an important in specialty manufacturing. The new softwares used will minimize time and investment, thereby making it possible for more manufacturers of precision parts to install AJM centers.
