PROGRESS REPORT 10

Apr 21-Charlie had found a way to use the dough mixer at Donners bakery that will help to speed up production.

He comments that people seem to be frightened by the changes taking place in him. APR 22-Mr. Donner arranges for Charlie to join the bakers union but Charlie feels that his co-workers are starting to feel hostile toward him.

Charlie asks Alice Kinnian to a movie. APR 24-He overhears Nemur and Strauss debating whether to go public with the experiment at a scientific convention. He comes to understand that they are just ordinary men. Charlie begins to feel that he is a part of the university setting.

He makes friends with some colleges students and starts to ponder deep philosophical points such as the existence of God.

Apr 28-Charlie dreamt his mother argued with his father that he is capable of learning and of succeeding in a normal schools. Charlie is traumatized by his parents argument that he wets himself.

Charlies personality is beginning to divide into two distinct individual: the old unintelligent Charlie and the new intelligent Charlie. Going out with Miss Kinnian represents Charlies emotional and sexual growth. He has reached an adolescent level.

Charlies intelligent is approaching Nemurs and Strausss. His former isolation from the world is starting to disappear.

PROGRESS REPORT 11
May 1-Charlie becomes infatuated with Alice Kinnian. Charlie tries to admit that he loves her but he failed to do so. May 3-Charlie is confused by his memory: he often recalls his memory during his childhood.

May 8-He also found out that Gimpy had betrayed Mr. Donners trust by stealing money from Donners Bakery. May 9-He realizes that Gimpy had made him part of the theft by having getting him deliver under-priced packages to customers.

MAY 10-Charlie finally confessed his feelings to Alice but he was rejected. Charlie confronts Gimpy and advice him to stop stealing. MAY 15-Charlie spends hours at university library.

MAY 17-Charlie remembered on their concert date, he tries to make love to Alice but a young voyeur distracts him. The young boy was a hallucination caused by his anxiety.

20-Charlie gets fired from the bakery because other employees have begun to hate him. His ex co-worker Fannie Birden, told him that it is not natural for men to know more than God has allowed him to know.

25-Charlie visits Alices apartment and discusses his depressed feelings. Alice thinks of losing his job is symbolic of losing his real family.

Charlie recalls a time when a woman exposed herself to him as he made a delivery from the bakery and reminds him how his mother beat him whenever he got an erection. Alice tries to calm him by kissing him but Charlies sense of panic is too much and he breaks down.

Charlies

date with Alice demonstrates a natural development in his personal relationships. The voyeur suggests that there may be some deep-seated sexual problems he has yet to face. His emotional development is becoming more sophisticated regarding to his episode with Gimpy. Charlie realizes that now he is maturing but it is starting to make him feel ostracized.

THEMES
Charlie has reached an adolescent or pubescent level. Charlies intellectual level has growth rapidly. Fear of making love-Even though Charlie has become an intelligent man, there is still childish thought about sexuality in him due to his childhood memories.

LITEARARY DEVICES
Metaphor-echo like great church bells in my mind refers to the great thinkers like Freud and Plato.(pr 10,pg49) Symbol-Alice thinks of losing Charlies job is symbolic of losing his real family.(pr 11,pg 77)

Onomatopoeia-Gimpy put his hand in his pocket and Charlie hears the faint clink of coins.(pr 11,pg 62)

Hyperbole- I was seeing them clearly for the first time-not gods or even heroes.(pr 11, pg 49). Simile- I had be as guilty as Gimpy by my silence.(pr 11, pg 62). Alliteration-What happened today at the lab was very upsetting.
