Introduction
Embarking on its journey 25 years ago with
just over 800 units, the countrys largest car maker ,Maruti Suzuki India, has driven past the milestone of producing 80 lakh cars. Since the rollout of the first Maruti 800 from its Gurgaon plant on 14 December, 1983, the company has so far produced a total of 81,05,228 cars of its 14 models as on 31 July from its Gurgaon and Manesar facilities. December 14, 1983 was clearly an


emotional moment for Mrs Gandhi. Not only was it the birth anniversary of her son Sanjay Gandhi, but it also marked the fulfillment of his dream: the "people's car". It was a struggle, recalls R.C. manufacturing facilities in India. The first facility is at Gurgaon spread over 300 acres and the other facility is at Manesar, spread over 600 acres in North India.

installed capacity of 350,000 cars per year, several productivity improvements over the years have enabled the company to manufacture nearly 700,000 cars/ annum at the Gurgaon facilities. captive power plants to meet its power requirements and of its joint venture companies located in its vicinity. The major fuel used for power generation is natural gas. They are a zero waste water discharge company. Canal water is the main source of fresh water. All the waste water generated is recycled and reused. The company has constructed Rain Water Harvesting structures within the factory premises to collect rain water and recharge back into the aquifer below ground level. Total recharge rain water handling storage and recharging capacity is 20,000 cubic meters.

National Road Safety Mission

Maruti Suzuki considers road safety to be an


integral part of its social initiatives. Taking forward its commitment to road safety, Maruti Suzuki has adopted a National Road Safety Mission launched in Dec 2008 under which 500000 people will be trained in road safety in the next three years. This will be done through the two channels - Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) and the Maruti Driving Schools spread across the country. Of the 500,000 people to be trained, at least 100,000 will be people from underprivileged section of

With the launch of IDTRs, Maruti Suzuki introduced world


class driving training facilities to India. These include scientifically laid-out driving tracks, advanced computer simulators and a theory module for class room training. IDTR at Loni, started in 2000 in collaboration with the Delhi government, is spread over 14.6 acres. It caters primarily to commercial vehicle drivers. In 2006, the second IDTR was set up at Sarai Kale Khan, South Delhi to focus on personal car and Light Motor Vehicle drivers. They have recently added two IDTR's one in Uttrakhand and another at Gujarat. Taking a step forward the Institute at Vadodra ( Gujarat) will not only impart driving training and contribute to road safety, it will also offer automobile technical training to Gujarat's tribal and under-privileged youth to strengthen their employability. Road safety is a key concern area for both the government
and people on the road. according to various studies lack of professionalism in driving and untrained drivers are primarily responsible for the majority of road accidents.

As a part of our initiative to improve road safety and inculcate safe and systematic driving habits among people. Maruti Suzuki has opened Maruti Driving Training School (MDS) modelled on International Lines, where there are components of Classroom Training, Practical Training and Attitude Training. There are world-class Simulators to give a hands-on feel to learners before taking the vehicle on the road, which is especially beneficial to those who have a fear of driving. These also simulate various road and weather conditions like fog, dim light, uphill and downhill terrain, to provide comprehensive training to learners.

Maruti Suzuki, India's largest manufacturer of passenger cars,
launched Eeco, a multipurpose vehicle here. Maruti had rolled out Eeco at Auto Expo 2010, recently held in New Delhi. "The initial response to Eeco is very good. It will be available across all our counters in the country," Maruti Suzuki India Chief General Manager (Sales), R S Kalsi, told reporters while unveiling the vehicle here on Wednesday.
