Texas A&M University Department of Civil Engineering Instructor: Dr. Francisco Olivera CVEN 689 Civil Engineering Applications of GIS, Spring 2004 Lufthansa Kanta May 3, 2004 Abstract
The hydraulic simulation models are key tools for design, analysis, operation and maintenance of the water distribution systems. Most of the models require extensive spatial and hydraulic infrastructure data such as topographic map, street map, utility map, land use data, site development plan, etc. GIS can provide all these information as it has the unique ability to capture and store spatial data, to build relational database and to display data graphically. GIS can also be used as a long term planning tool for the water distribution systems as it can be easily updated as development occurs. Building a network is the first step of the hydraulic simulation. Manual schematization of the network is extremely resource and time intensive. GIS can be a useful tool to build a hydraulic model for water distribution system. This project demonstrates how to create EPANet hydraulic model input data using GIS.
Data
1. City of College Station - Water lines data 2. City of College Station - Land use data 3. Brazos County Polygon Shapefile 4. USGS 30 m DEM
Methodology
1. Downloading ArcView Extension from ESRI web site (http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=10117) 2. Skeletonizing the Network 3. Calculating Demand from Land Use Data 4. Creating Elevation Map from USGS 30 m DEM 5. Creating EPANet inp format file using HydroGen (Hydraulic Model Generator) Extension Version 2.2 6. Importing inp format file in EPANet 2.0 and Adding Pumps, Tanks and Reservoirs to the network 7. Performing Hydraulic Simulation using EPANet 2.0
Software Requirement
1. ArcGIS 8.x 2. ArcView 3.x 3. EPANet 2.0
