Integrating GIS With EPANet

Texas A&M University Department of Civil Engineering Instructor: Dr. Francisco Olivera CVEN 689 Civil Engineering Applications of GIS, Spring 2004 Lufthansa Kanta May 3, 2004 Abstract
The hydraulic simulation models are key tools for design, analysis, operation and maintenance of the water distribution systems. Most of the models require extensive spatial and hydraulic infrastructure data such as topographic map, street map, utility map, land use data, site development plan, etc. GIS can provide all these information as it has the unique ability to capture and store spatial data, to build relational database and to display data graphically. GIS can also be used as a long term planning tool for the water distribution systems as it can be easily updated as development occurs. Building a network is the first step of the hydraulic simulation. Manual schematization of the network is extremely resource and time intensive. GIS can be a useful tool to build a hydraulic model for water distribution system. This project demonstrates how to create EPANet hydraulic model input data using GIS.

Creating EPANet data file using HydroGen

HydroGen (Hydraulic Model Generator) Version 2.2

This is an ArcView 3.x extension which can create EPANet inp format file using Water lines shapefile, Demand Polygon shapefile and Elevation Map. The extension can handle only pipes and nodes; other network objects like pumps, control valves, tanks and reservoirs should be added to the network manually by the user after generating EPANet hydraulic model input file. This extension calculates base demand for network nodes from demand polygon and gathers elevation data for the nodes from elevation map.
