What is matter????

Matter is anything that has a mass and

takes up space.

Kinetic Theory of Matter

Says that: Matter is made up of particles which are in continual random motion.

STATES OF MATTER

Four States of Matter

1. 2. 3. 4.
Solid Liquid Gas Plasma

STATES OF MATTER
Based Upon:
Particle arrangement Energy of particles Distance between particles

STATES OF MATTER SOLIDS

Particles of solids are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position. Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume.

STATES OF MATTER LIQUIDS

Particles of liquids are tightly packed, but are far enough apart to slide over one another. Liquids have an indefinite shape and a definite volume.

STATES OF MATTER GAS

Particles of gases are very far apart and move freely.

Gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume.

PHASE CHANGES
Description of Phase Change Term for Phase Change Heat Movement During Phase Change

Solid to liquid

Melting

Heat goes into the solid as it melts.

Heat leaves the liquid as it freezes.

PHASE CHANGES

Liquid to gas

Vaporization, which includes Heat goes into the boiling and liquid as it vaporizes. evaporation
Heat leaves the gas as it condenses. Heat goes into the solid as it sublimates.

Gas to liquid Condensation

Solid to gas

Sublimation

But what happens if you raise the temperature to super-high levels between 1000C and 1,000,000,000C ?

Will everything just be a gas?

NO! HEATING A GAS WILL TURN IT INTO PLASMA WHICH HAS CHARGED PARTICLES

STATES OF MATTER PLASMA

A plasma is composed of electrically charged particles. So, plasma is a very good conductor of electricity. Plasmas, like gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume.

STATES OF MATTER

SOLID
Tightly packed, in a regular pattern Vibrate, but do not move from place to place

LIQUID
Close together with no regular arrangement. Vibrate, move about, and slide past each other

GAS
Well separated with no regular arrangement. Vibrate and move freely at high speeds

PLASMA
Has no definite volume or shape and is composed of electrical charged particles

Lab Directions
Get into groups of 4 find a lab station and take your interactive journal with you. Grab a textbook, go to page 22-23, and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS at each lab station EXACTLY! Draw all tables and charts that are at each station in your interactive journal.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
-to be written on the LEFT page -note the date, title, page # in Table Of Contents
1. Draw a Frayer Diagram for each of the states of matter. You should have 4 different Frayer diagrams. Use the following template for each:

5. The graph below shows the heating curve of water. Label each state of matter or phase change.
A. B. C. D. E. F. ____________________ ____________________ ____________________ ____________________ ____________________ ____________________

2. Write the states of matter in order of decreasing distance of the particles (least packed to most packed). 3. Under the same conditions of pressure and temperature, a liquid differs from a gas because the molecules of the liquid ____________. A. have no regular arrangement B. are in constant motion C. have stronger forces of attraction between them D. take the shape of the container they are in

4. Which of the following best describes what happens to the energy? A. They are larger in solids than in liquids or gases. B. They are larger in gases than in solids or liquids. C. They do not move in solids. D. They are always moving.
