Experimental Objective Introduction Background Information Materials Procedure Data/Observations Results Conclusion

To construct a successful boom that will win the highest design ratio. To understand the how booms are constructed and used To understand the concepts of stress and strain.

Boom construction is used to carry heavy load. Example of booms:

Bridges and cranes

Helped with the construction of large structures and connected land masses.

Boom

Capable of lifting and moving object multiple times the weight of the boom Main concept: distribute weight over the length of the boom

Common Examples of Booms

Bridges
Cantilever Bridge Swing Bridge Bascule Bridge

Cranes
Common fixture used in construction
Anchored to the ground with bolts going through

400,000 pound concrete base Capable of lifting up to 40,000 pounds

Three Types of Load

Dead Load Stationary Load
Live Load Mobile Load Cyclic Load Periodically Changing

Booms and External Forces

Three Types of Stress

Tensile Stretched/Pulled Compressive Squeezed/Squashed Shear Bent/Cleaved

Tensile Stress

Can be calculated by
Where s is stress F is applied force A is the cross sectional area

Resulting Strain

Can be calculated by
Where L is change in length L0 is objects original length

Stress Strain Graph

Elastic Region: Material will return to original shape

Elastic Limit: Materials maximum strain before it is permanently deformed

Booms and Factors Leading to Malfunction

Three main factors

Corrosion ie: Rust forming on iron Erosion ie: Rocks along a river bed being smooth out Thermal Cycling ie: Cold glass of water put into very hot water (Thermal Shock)

Competition Rules

Must be at least 1.5 meters long Maximum of two minutes are allowed to anchor boom Highest Design Ratio wins the competition

Competition Design Ratio

2 Thick Dowels (7/16" x 48") 2 Thin Dowels (5/16" x 48") 6 Bamboo Skewers (12") HD Tape Kevlar String

Assess given materials Brainstorm ideas Sketch design

Improvements

Use more sticks to stabilize the boom inside the anchorage Increase the length of the boom
