Learning
It is defined as any relatively permanent change in the behaviour of an individual by experience. It results in the outflow of experience, values, morals, ethics etc. Add value to learning by sharing.

Objectives- Gain knowledge, develop skills and create desirable changes in the employees.

Types of Learning Classical: Active stimulus gets response. Apparent: E.g. Punishing for being late. Social: Observing and behaving. E.g. Parents, teachers, leaders etc. Mechanism of Learning-

One learns through experience Through association, assimilation, exploration and correct response. Famliy and friends and major source. Institutions like schools and colleges. Atma-manthan (Introspectiion). Mouna Vrat (Silence) Dhyan (Meditation) Social institutions viz. Churches, Temples etc.

Gurukul System
Training on the art of using weaponry. Vedas Music and art Self defence Gurudakshina- Acknowledgment, respect and thanks. Dakshina not always in Monetary but a special task the teacher wants the student to accomplish.

Indian System of Learning


Ancient system Gurukul system. All time energy to learning. Teachers-Gurus available 24 hours. Lived and learnt from natural surroundings. Syllabus was flexible, custom made. Shishya learnt dignity of work and equality of mankind by doing all work themselves.

Sacrifice comforts and give due importance to education. Guru focused on internal development, teaching spirituality along with varied sciences like Ayurveda, Arthashastra etc. It was restricted to select people/castes/ sects and only males. Gurus were selected on the basis of their castes.

Modern or Current System


Follows Govt. defined education system. Students stay at home, hostels, study in colleges. Teachers available only for fixed duration. Learning- Devoid of nature. Fixed syllabus. Education and discipline restricted to only college hours. Teachers focus on outward development. System open to all, promote education to female. Teachers selected on basis of qualification, experience and expertise.

Advantages of Gurukul System


An ocean of knowledge in a jar. They got practical and in depth look into life. Children from all classes of society lived under the gurukul roof as brothers. Along with practical knowledge they also received knowledge on various aspects of life. They are taught impeccable manners and values that life is based on. They were mainly taught respect for elders, mother, father and mainly teacher. To live with meagre material things and no fancy, pretentious object.

Disadvantages of Gurukul learning


Females were not admitted to Gurukul. The children had to stay away from home for long periods of time, i.e. for more than 12 years. They were kept away from their parents and family. They led a sheltered life at the Gurukul. There was no standard syllabus. No criteria for admission apart from the caste and whims and fancies of the teacher.
