REVAMPING THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Shaping the Future Leaders of Athletics

Created By Tiffany Worthen

CHANGE CAN BE GOOD

Why do we need to update the program?

Increase professionalism of office standard Create nuanced internship experiences Efficiently use time of interns Foster mentorship relationships with staff and interns Increase leadership/supervisory role of director staff To directly align NCHSAA with goal of becoming a National Model in all aspects of organization

HOW DO WE CHANGE ?
Create 3 types of internships Publicize for internship Online application Multi-staff review of applicants Foster internship engagement year long Target interns for positive feedback to promote program

INTERNSHIP TYPES

Sports Administration/Student Services

Focus on helping with student services projects, shadow sports department, attend officiating clinic, major assistant with championships, brackets, SASI, Heart of Champion, SAAC liaison, shadow operations meetings, any other duties assigned Do basic research for grants, shadow meetings, learn how to cold call, research for prospective corporate sponsors, review committee for scholarship applicants, banners/advertising set up at championships, event give-aways, any other duties assigned Wells Fargo Cup, Assist with mailings of directories/handbooks, Football Frenzy Blog, create blog for other sports similar to Football Frenzy, shadow Press Release process, Update Record Book and coaches Records, any other duties assigned

Development/Marketing

Media

HEAR YE, HEAR YE

Target Triangle/Surrounding area colleges by sending emails to career services dept during back to school kick offs Put inexpensive flyers on common areas in local campuses (NCSU, NCCU, Duke, UNC, Shaw, St. Aug) Word of Mouth/ Speaking engagements NCHSAA Facebook/Twitter Account Send emails to Athletic Dept, Journalism Schools, Nonprofit Studies Dept, etc

APPLICATION PROCESS
Online Portal On web Can apply online/mail Applicants will be reviewed by committee of director staff/1 commissioner Applicants notified 2 weeks after deadline

SHAPING FUTURE LEADERS: MENTORSHIP

All interns are provided opportunity to shadow departments outside of their internship opportunity (i.e. Attend officials clinic or SASI) Direct work/supervision with NCHSAA director staff Creating a custom/hands-on internship creates employment worthy skills for interns

HOW WE CAN BENEFIT FROM GREAT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM ?

Potential New Donor Pool for endowment/scholarship fund Create testimonial on web from former interns They go on to find careers within the NCHSAA, coaching staff, athletic administration, etc Garner up next recruiting group of interns by word of mouth

POINTS OF EMPHASIS TOWARDS INTERNS

As a member of the director staff to ensure this program succeeds I would:

Coordinate application review/selection process Host potential interviews of applicants (if needed) Give a run down of the programs, the NCHSAA goals, expectations and mentality/professionalism we look for Promotion of a Can Do mentality, explain how they are helping us attain our goal as a National Model of Excellence

POINTS FOR CONSIDERATION

Small stipend for travel to outside office events ? In the budget? Should internships be offered Fall, Spring, Summer or annually? How do we connect interns with job opportunities in athletics? Legality of having interns that are not paid/working towards college credit? Possibly we can target the internship towards those in programs needing hours (navigate around paying)? How much time does each department REALISTICALLY have to spend in planning projects/coordinating work for interns?

GOOD OF THE ORDER

So How do we proceed?

Timeline: Get application live online end of July? Give presentation to director staff, and get active input/ assign duties Collect University email information to advertise program
