Have you ever wondered?

The Bohr Model: A Closer Look!

The Bohr model shows that the electrons in atoms are in

orbits of differing energy around the nucleus (think of planets orbiting around the sun).
Bohr used the term energy levels (or shells) to describe these

orbits of differing energy.

The Bohr Model: A Closer Look!

The energy level an electron normally occupies is called its

ground state. But it can move to a higher-energy, by absorbing energy. This higher-energy, less-stable state is called the electrons excited state.

The Bohr Model: A Closer Look!

Sometimes the energy released by electrons occupies the

portion of the electromagnetic spectrum(the range of wavelengths of energy) that humans detect as visible light. Slight variations in the amount of the energy are seen as light of different colors.

Light Emission Spectra

1st: An electron must become excited 2nd: Once an electron ABSORBS ENERGY it will jump up to a

higher energy level

3rd: However, what goes up must come down. The electron

falls back down to the original energy shell and LIGHT (a photon) IS PRODUCED!! **ROY G. BIV
Violet is the highest in energy and in frequency (how fast a

wave travels)
Red is the lowest in energy and frequency

Steps for creating the Bohr Model

Remember ATOMIC # = # protons = TOTAL electrons
Energy Level 1 2 3 Etc.. Max # of Electrons 2 8 8 8

Draw dots on energy levels starting closest to nucleus until

TOTAL # e - reached!

Guided Practice
Boron (B)
How many electrons? __________ Draw the nucleus and start dividing electrons among shells. Remember:
Energy Level 1 2 3 Etc.. Max # of Electrons 2 8 8 8

Guided Practice
Neon (Ne)
How many electrons? __________ Draw the nucleus and start dividing electrons among shells. Remember:
Energy Level 1 2 3 Etc.. Max # of Electrons 2 8 8 8

Guided Practice (2 min)

You try the next two by yourself (Sodium and Nitrogen)! Ask a table partner if you get stuck. Follow these steps:
How many electrons? __________ Draw the nucleus and start dividing electrons among shells.

Group Activity
You have 4 minutes to identify your elements and

record them on the back of your notes.

Talk with the members of your table and identify

any similarities you have in your items.

Answer questions 1-2 as a group. Each person

record your answers on the back of your notes.

Discussion Questions
Which scientist proposed this atomic model? What is incorrect about this atomic model? What does each row have in common? What does each column have in common? Devise a rule that will allow you to determine the

number of valence electrons for Groups 1-2 and 318 using on only the Periodic Table.

Independent Practice (10 min)

Complete all independent practice questions on the

left side of your notebook.

You do not need to write the multiple-choice

questionsjust the answers!

Exit Ticket
When an electron absorbs energy it moves to its

____________ state. However what goes up must come down, so when it loses energy it goes back to its _________ state.
In which shell would an electron have the most energy? Draw the Bohr Model for Aluminum. Make sure to label each

energy level.
