UNIT 2 PRONOUN
Pronoun can replace a noun or another pronoun.

The Use of Pronoun


We use pronoun ( he, she, which, none, you, etc) to make the sentences less cumbersome and less repetitive.

1. Personal Pronouns
A personal pronoun refers to a specific person or thing and changes its form to indicate person, number, gender, and case.

Examples: The smallest gift is mine. This is yours. The possessive pronouns mine and yours functions as a subject complement.

2. Demonstrative Pronouns
Example: This must not continue.

This is used as the subject of the compound verb must not continue.

This is puny; that is the tree I want. This is used as subject and refers to something close to the speaker. That is also a subject but refers to something farther away from the speaker.

5. Indefinite Pronouns
Is a pronoun referring to an identifiable but not specified person or thing.

Examples:

Many were invited to the lunch but only twelve showed up. The office had been searched and everything was thrown onto the floor.

SUBJECT/ VERB AGREEMENT AFTER CERTAIN WORDS


These words or expressions are grammatically singular, so they take singular verbs:

6. Reflexive Pronouns
We use a reflexive pronoun when the subject and object are the same.

Tom cut himself while he was shaving this morning. (not Tom cut him)
Dont get angry. Control yourself! (said to one person)

We tortured ourselves with the thought of the upcoming exam. (the action of torturing is being reflected back to the subject)

7. Intensive Pronouns
Is a pronoun used to emphasize its antecedent. Examples:

I myself believe that aliens should abduct my sister. The Prime Minister himself said that he would lower taxes.

Using Pronouns Clearly


Pronouns should: 1. AGREE in NUMBER For example: If a student parks a car on campus, he or she has to buy a parking sticker. (NOT: If a student parks a car on campus, they have to buy a parking sticker.)

2. AGREE in PERSON If you are writing in the "first person" ( I), don't confuse your reader by switching to the "second person" ( you) or "third person" (he, she, they, it, etc.). Similarly, if you are using the "second person," don't switch to "first" or "third. When a person comes to class, he or she should have his or her homework ready. (NOT: When a person comes to class, you should have your homework ready.)
