Coordinate Measuring Machine

3-D device. Measuring the physical geometrical characteristic of an object.

Human or computer controlled.

Six degrees of freedom and displays readings in mathematical form

Description
3 Orthogonal axes X, Y and Z. The X,Y,Z coordinates of each points determine size and position with precision. Test a part against design intent Points are collected by a probe that is positioned manually or automatically Programmed to measure identical parts repeatedly

Main components
Data collection and reduction system

3 axes of motion

Probing system

CMM
Hardware
1)Motors 2)Structure 3)Cables 4)Display 5)Remote 6)Probe

Software
1)3-D graphics window

Working of CMM

Object to be tested is fitted to bench

Probe moves in all 6 axis

Probe notes the dimensions, accuracy of different cuts , roughness , depth, angularity , orientation and Profile measurement

These readings are transformed in to electrical signals and transferred

Readings are compared with the Standard Design data (previously stored)

Results are displayed on 3-D graphic display

Based on this piece is accepted or rejected

Types of CMM
*Articulated arm *portable or tripod mounted *probe can be placed in many different
directions

Portable Coordinate Measuring Machine

Different from "traditional CMMs. Arms have six or seven rotary axes with rotary encoders, instead of linear axes. Arms are lightweight . Requires human to use it, and accuracy is much less than a bridge type CMM

Multi-Sensor Measuring Machines

Includes laser, video or white light sensors

Common Applications

1)Dimensional measurement 2)Profile measurement 3)Angularity or orientation 4)Depth mapping 5)Digitizing or imaging 6)Shaft measurement

Water Line: line specifies level of the part from

ground

Transfer Line

: This specifies distance between wheels of car

Total load act on this line
