National Heroes

There are a lot of different factors that go into deciding who is a national hero. A hero is most often defined by a action that they did that was considered outstanding or extraordinary.

National Heroes of Macedonia

The national heroes of Macedonia made the nation proud and the people acknowledge them as an important part of the history and culture of the country.

Goce Delchev

Is the biggest Macedonian hero. Goce Delcev gave his life for the freedom of the country. He lived in the begining of 20-th century , when Macedonian were fighting for freedom against 5 centuries Otoman rule over Macedonia. He was part of the Macedonian national fight.

Pitu Guli
An Aromanian revolutionary in Ottoman Macedonia, a local leader of what is commonly referred to as the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO)

Dame Gruev
An insurgent leader in Ottoman Macedonia and Thrace. He was among the founders of the Bulgarian MacedonianAdrianople Revolutionary Committees. The mainstream scholarship regards him as a Bulgarian and the Macedonian scholars as Macedonian revolutionary

Jane Sandanski
He was a revolutionary, one of the leaders of the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization (IMARO) in the Serres region and head of the extreme leftist wing of the organization.

Grigor Prlichev
A famous writer from the 19th century. In 1870 Parlichev translated his awardwinning poem "The Serdar" into Bulgarian in an attempt to popularize his earlier works, which were written in Greek, among the Bulgarian audience. He also wrote another poem "Skenderbeg", and his autobiography.

Krste Petkov Misirkov A very famous national hero of Macedonia and also in the Macedonian history. A philologist and publicist, . The author of the most important book "Za makedonckite raboti".

Mother Teresa
Founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to the poor, particularly to the destitute of India. She was the recipient of numerous honours, including the 1979 Nobel Prize for Peace.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights leader whose orations touched the heart of a nation. Because King had always promoted peaceful demonstrations in trying to reach civil-rights reforms, he was presented the Nobel Peace Award in 1964. Martin Luther King Jr., through writing and stirring speeches, made America aware of the great injustices that were being faced by its black population.

Walter Elias Disney


He came up with the idea for what was to be known as "Mickey Mouse." He also envisioned using sound for the first time with cartoon voices to enhance the movie strips. So, it was in 1928 that the public accepted their new character and history was made. He won a total of 32 Oscar Awards- more than anyone else ever has!

Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong


Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong is considered historically as having had the most influence on jazz music. Over the next decade, Armstrong keenly promoted jazz music by playing on Broadway and on visitations to England and France. The New Orleans airport was renamed Louis Armstrong International Airport.

Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein was a major scientist who predicted the danger of atomic weapons. perfected an idea he called the Theory of Relativity.

In 1921, Einstein was awarded a Nobel Prize for his 1905 photoelectric effect paper. Albert Einstein offered significant theories that opened the universe to the world.

Neil Alden Armstrong


Neil Armstrong, a NASA astronaut, in 1969 became the first man to ever walk on the moon. As he did, Neil Armstrong historically stated "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." Neil Armstrong received the Medal of Freedom, the highest honor bestowed on US civilians.

National heroes of Australia

Ned Kelly
Ned Kelly is Australia's most famous bushranger. Said to have been forced into bushranging by the police, who were looking to shoot him, he and his gang robbed banks rather than robbing common folk. The Kelly gang had many active supporters and a wide following, and he made plans for the establishing a Republic of North Eastern.

This turned him into a local folk hero.

Henry Lawson

Henry Lawson is one of the most famous and most popular of all Australian writers. Lawson's works also mirror his political ideologies which were: The promotion of a republic The belief in a European Australia The desire for social justice. These three major strands frequently appear in his writings. He wrote of a future where it was necessary to have revolutionary changes in order to attain freedom from the imperialist exploitation and power.

Banjo Paterson
ndrew Barton Paterson is possibly Australia's most popular poet, with his compositions including Waltzing Matilda. A Bush Poet and Nationalist Patriot. Paterson's poetry and stories, still popular to this day, often evoking a strong affection for, and affinity with, the Australian bush and community.

Jack LangJack Lang was one of the pioneers of Australian independence and a defender of the sovereign right of the Australian people to freedom and dignity. Lang fought the banks in the interests of the Australian people; His legacy is a simple one: put Australia First against the usurpations of international finance and its local hirelings. His views on White Australia and economic independence are the opinions of modern Australian nationalists.

Daniel Deniehy
Republican Patriot
A republican patriot and member of parliament, he led his life according to his principles. He worked hard to:

1) achieve a genuine people's democracy, 2) make land available to the ordinary citizen, 3) promote Australianism against imperialism, and 4) keep Australia free from Asianisation.

National Heroes of Canada

Reginald Aubrey Fessenden

He is often referred to as the unsung hero of telecommunications industry. Fessenden was a pioneer in the field of wireless communications whereby he had developed a completely new wireless transmission system. Fessenden held over 500 patents and won Scientific American's Gold Medal in 1929 for the fathometer, which could measure the depth of water beneath a ship's keel.

Marilyn Bell

Bell is renowned for her achievements in the field of sports. After becoming the first woman to swim the 52 kilometers, across Lake Ontario, Bell became a National hero of Canada. Being the youngest swimmer to cross the English Channel.
Marilyn's famous crossing of Lake Ontario took place at age 16, as the contenders were unable to complete the swim

George Beurling
Flight Lieutenant George Beurling was the most renowned pilot of Canada during Second World War and also a leading National hero. His great feats include Shooting down 27 enemy planes within two weeks. He had a sharp mind for numbers and details and was also one of the top marksmen in air.

Terry Fox
Terrance Stanley "Terry" Fox CC OD, was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer research activist. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated, he embarked on a crossCanada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. This cost him his life, his efforts resulted in a lasting, worldwide

legacy.

He is a national hero in Canada. There are numerous streets, parks, buildings, and schools named for him.
