Natural Gas Processing Drying Package Molecular Sieve

Introduction

Dehydration of natural gas is the removal of the water and H2S that are associated with natural gases in vapor form. Dehydration prevents the formation of gas hydrates and reduces corrosion. Several methods have been developed to dehydrate gases on an industrial scale: Direct cooling, Adsorption, Absorption.

Area Classification: Hazardous Area classification reduces the ignition probability of un-ignited vapor releases.
The

hazardous area classification zone 2 (H2S) covers the whole unit area.
surrounding area is categorized Zone 2 for hydrocarbon releases.

Failure Modes:
Internal

corrosion: was way below (0.01 mm/y) the allowed limits which was (0.115 mm/y on a 35 Years Designed Lifetime) (Low Probability).
Corrosion: was found to be less (0.038 mm/y based on a pitting corrosion of 0.7mm depth) than the designed limit (0.115 mm/y) (Low Probability).

External

Molecular sieve 1013-14-MS-01

Failure Modes:
Erosion:

Due to the lack of inspection data and based on the teams technical back ground and from the process point of view, it was concluded that the molecular sieve dust escapes from the tower with the output gas so erosion is expected in the bottom of the tank and through the outlet nozzle due to the high velocity of the output gas (Medium-High probability).

Molecular sieve 1013-14-MS-01

Failure Modes:
Creep:

Due to exposure of the sieve to high temperatures (320C) during the regeneration process, creep is expected although the design temperature limit is above the op. limit (350C) (Medium probability). Thermal Fatigue: Due to the process design of the molecular sieve each tower is exposed to a repeating heating cycle daily, thermal fatigue is probable (Medium-High probability)

Molecular sieve 1013-14-MS-01

Failure Modes:
SCC:

No agent available except H2S which is present in the inlet gas with low concentration (<50ppm) and high sulfur steel used in the vessel, therefore no SCC damage is assumed (Low Probability).
Temperature Embrittlement: Although high temperatures are recorded, they are still below the limits so (Medium Probability).
