Renewable Energy for Rural India

Relevance of Renewable Energy Technologies in Overall Energy Plan for Rural India

Why Renewable Energy?

Form of Renewable Energy

Introduction
The key development objectives of the power sector

is supply of electricity to all areas including rural areas as mandated in section 6 of the Electricity Act Both the central government and state governments would jointly endeavour to achieve this objective India is using Renewable Sources of Energy like Hydel Energy, Wind Energy, and Solar Energy to electrify villages and ensuring that electricity reaches poor and marginal sections of the society at reasonable rates

Form Of Renewable Energy

Hydroelectricity refers to electricity generated

by hydropower; Production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water. It is the most widely used form of renewable energy, accounting for 16 percent of global electricity generation The cost of hydroelectricity is relatively low, making it a competitive source of renewable electricity Once a hydroelectric complex is constructed, the project produces no direct waste, and has a considerably lower output level of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) than fossil fuel powered energy plants

Form Of Renewable Energy

Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a

useful form of energy, such as using wind turbines to make electrical power, windmills for mechanical power, wind pumps for water pumping or drainages. Wind power, as an alternative to fossil fuels, is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation and uses little land. The effects on the environment are generally less problematic than those from other power sources

Form Of Renewable Energy

Solar Power is converted by the use of photovoltaic

panels and solar thermal collectors to harness the energy The development of affordable, inexhaustible and clean solar energy technologies will have huge longer-term benefits. It will increase countries energy security through reliance on an indigenous, inexhaustible and mostly import-independent resource, enhance sustainability, reduce pollution, lower the costs of mitigating climate change, and keep fossil fuel prices lower than otherwise

Why Relevant?

Relevance
Particular attention would be given in household electrification

to dalit bastis, tribal areas and other weaker sections. Development of infrastructure would also cater for requirement of agriculture & other economic activities including irrigation pump sets, small and medium industries, khadi and village industries, cold chain and social services like health and education. Rural Electrification Corporation of India, a Government of India enterprise will be the nodal agency at Central Government level to implement the programme for achieving the goal set by National Common Minimum Programme of giving access to electricity to all the households in next five years
