Benefit
Being able to deploy Connect DX nodes on existing DWDM (OC-192/TN-64X based) or OPTera LH networks (re-using same regen and line amp sites) A to Z ring wide provisioning/connection management, so rings composed of mixed NE type could be supported (e.g. OPC-192 4-F ADM and Connect DX 4-F ADM). It is key to be able to deploy a 4-F Connect DX in an existing 4-F ring at key locations where additional Add/Drop or hub functionality is required.

37

OPTera Connect DX1 Network Level Traffic Switching in 2FR

One half of the 10G bandwidth available between adjacent nodes
can be used for working traffic, with the remainder reserved for protection.

The bandwidth partitioning is accomplished by mapping traffic

into channels (time slots) 1 through 96/SONET or 1 through 32/SDH ( the working channels) for OC-192/TN-64X applications.

If a Ring Protection Switch needs to be performed, traffic gets redirected by looping back time slots away from the fault. The working channels, 1 through 96/SONET or 1 through 32/SDH, get mapped onto the protection channels, 97 through 192/SONET or 33 through 64/SDH, respectively on the fibers going in the opposite direction.

Time slot bridging only occurs at the nodes adjacent to the fault
with intermediate nodes simply passing through the re-directed traffic back around the ring. YM
NORTEL NETWORKS CONFIDENTIAL OPTera Connect DX Release 1 - November 1999 - Version 0.2 - Slide # 38

38

OPTera Connect DX1 2-FR Network Reconfigurations

Add/Delete Nodes
Adding an NE to ring requires a Forced Ring Switch to be applied to each of the adjacent nodes. With Forced Ring Switch the protection bandwidth will be occupied, thus some disruption to the BLSR operation of the network will result. As for 4-FR configuration, the NE will operate as Full Passthrough on both the Protection and the Working lines when in forced state. Full APS channel (K-Byte) Passthrough is also forced.

Synchronization Status Messaging

NORTEL NETWORKS CONFIDENTIAL

Issue 0.2

Introduction: Basic Terminology

BITS: Building-integrated timing supply provided to the NE from
an external clock source. The external source is 1.544Mb/s DS-1 for SONET, or a 2MHz for SDH.

ESI: Circuit pack located in the Control Shelf, (a) provides a DS1
or 2 MHz reference output (b) provides an output timing signal to Switch card based on available timing references. Two ESI cards provide 1+1 redundancy.

SSM: Synchronization Status Messaging, providing timing

references based on quality of available timing sources.

TG: Timing Generation group CLUI menu in NE, indicating state of

BITS and line timing sources.

TD: Timing Distribution group provided from line optics to SATT

for timing output references (G1OUT & G2OUT). Provisionable at CLUI level.
YM
NORTEL NETWORKS CONFIDENTIAL OPTera Connect DX Release 1 - November 1999 - Version 0.2 - Slide # 41

41

What is SSM?
Software functionality within NE that extracts/inserts S1 byte of
incoming/outgoing OC-N/STM-N and DS-1 signals.

Bits 5 to 8 (S1 byte) of the SONET overhead are read and

manipulated according to GR-253-CORE

Provides automatic switching to the most suitable timing reference

based on reference quality and priority.

Offers timing intelligence, reliability in network synchronization.

SSM Operation Following Fiber Cut

NE4 compares ST3 from NE3 to
ST1 from NE5, and selects the ST1 source. (the NE selects a different timing source).

NE4 transmits ST1 is to NE3 NE4 transmits DUS to NE5 NE3 recognizes a superior ST1
timing source from NE4 and switches from ST3 to ST1 timing.

Provisioning Requirements
Q: Are timing loops now eliminated? A: NO.
The user may still inadvertently provision a QC override that prevents the ESI from selecting the best timing source. The user may also provision a BITS-timed NE to include both BITS and line timing (currently done on OC-192/TN-64X !).

Q: Can timing loops be prevented entirely? A: NO !

If there is lost BITs sources in the network or fiber cuts, it is possible to get timing loops.

Q: What is the best way to prevent timing loops? A: Keep QL override for Rx & Tx to AUTO, so that SSM
is allowed to work.

User Considerations for DX1 SSM

Engineering Rules:
SSM is only supported on DX and TN-64X bays.
- OC-192 bays will not support SSM. Mix of OC-192 bays with DX will need to have SSM disabled. - Mix of DX and TN-64X bays supports SSM.

Both SONET and SDH SSM are supported but not at the same time.

Upgrades:
Upon NE upgrade to software which supports SSM, the NE will begin to read the incoming S1 byte, employ the SSM algorithm and writing the S1 byte.

QC will take precedence over TG priority.

SSM may be disabled by setting QC override to STU (forcing the NE to use priority levels).

Tributaries:
The OPTera DX cannot receive timing from tributaries (under consideration for a future release)

OPTera Connect DX1 Span of Control (SOC)

Can add different NE function types within same SOC
DX-ADM, OC192/TN64X Ring ADM 4FR and Regenerator only NEs which exist in a configuration, but which are not part of the OPCs SOC, will be assumed to be OC192/TN64X NEs, and their G-numbers will be displayed as such, regardless of the actual type of the NE.

Each OPTera Connect DX SOC can manage either SDH

or SONET types, but not both
The OPC Connection manager will allow the user to provision, modify, and delete cross-connects on OC-192 and STM-64 ring and chain systems.

MCS supports different NE loads on one OPC for multiple

NE types
Selection of Catalog file is based on NE type

Current upgrade procedure does not change

OPTera DX1 SOC Deployment Guidelines

Primary OPC and backup OPC are required for each SOC Primary and Backup OPCs should be in different
locations

Network size beyond the 150 node limit will require Level
2 routing

Maximum of 34 elements within same SOC Maximum of 30 datacomm hops between primary OPC to
a managed NE

Maximum of 4 concurrent INM workstations OPTera Connect software OPCs may be located in
existing 10Gb/s bays (OC-192/TN-64X).
