The cockpit instrument that indicates the aircraft's altitude above a fixed level. Gives the aircraft's height (usually in feet or meters) above some reference level (usually sea-level) by measuring the local air pressure. A pressure altimeter (also called barometric altimeter) is the altimeter found in most aircraft.

The local Modern aircraft atmospheric use a "sensitive pressure or altimeter" ambient pressure isneedle displayed in the Kollsman window primary = multiple revolutions = reference pressure one or more secondary needles = number of revolutions Aneroid barometer measures the atmospheric (similar to a clock face) pressure from a static port outside the aircraft static vent On a sensitive altimeter, the sea level reference pressure can be adjusted by a setting knob. Reference pressure = datum

It is adjustable for local barometric pressure (referenced to sea level) which must be set correctly to obtain accurate altitude readings.
The datum is set to the prevailing atmospheric pressure, either QFE, QNE or QNH

QNH or "altimeter setting - the regional or local air pressure at Mean Sea Level (MSL)

QFE - the pressure which will calibrate the altimeter to show the height above ground at a given airfield .
QNE - Standard Mean Sea Level (MSL)
