CONCEPT OF ENGINEERING DESIGN

PRESENT BY T.RAJKUMAR M.E (ENGINEERING DESIGN) PSNA CET

EMBODIMENT DESIGN

The next stage of the design process is often called embodiment design.

The activity at this stage is devoted to finalizing the product architecture.

The shape of parts that will satisfy the required functions, and quantifying the important design parameters.

STEP IN THE DESIGN PROCESS

RPODUCT ARCHITECTURE

Product architecture is the arrangement of the physical element of a product to carryout is required function.

There functional structure was determine as a way of generating design concept.

Some organization refer to this as system-level design.

Four step process for developing the product architecture

I.
II.

create a schematic diagram of the product cluster the element of the schematic

III.
IV.

create a rough geometric layout

identify the fundamental and incidental interactions

I. CREAATE THE SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM OF THE PRODUCT

II. CLUSTER THE ELEMENT OF THE SCHEMATIC

III. CREATE A ROUGH GEOMETRIC LAYOUT

IV. IDENTIFY THE FUNDAMENTAL AND INCIDENTAL INTER ACTION

For a quality design the interaction between the chunk should be controlled.

Here the first category of interaction is fundamental interaction.

It is used to under stood the design.

The second type of interaction is incident interaction. It is result of the physical implementation of the functional element.

CONFIGURATION DESIGN
In configuration design we establish the shape and general dimensions of components.

Fig-Method of productions

In starting configuration design we should follow these steps Review the product design specification. Establish the spatial constrains that pertain to the product or the

assembly being designed.

Create and refine the interface or connection between components. Again, the product architecture should give much guidance in this

respect.

In carrying out the design it is important to maintain functional independence in the design of an assembly. Before spending much time of the design, answer the following question 1. can the part be eliminated or combined with other part? 2. can a standard part or module be used?

PARAMETRIC DESIGN
In parametric design the attributes of the parts identified in configuration

design.
The design moves into parametric design, later part of embodiment design.

Designing to maximize performance and quality involves the following

design procedure. 1. Failure Mode and Effective Analysis 2. Design for reliability 3. Robust design 4. Tolerance

1.Failure Mode and Effective Analysis

FMEA is a methodology of determining all possible way that component can fail and establishing the failure on the system.

2. Design for reliability

Reliability is a measurement of the capacity of a system to operate without failure in the service environment. 3. Robust design Robust design is used to reduce the variability in performance and manufacture. Process of robust design 1. system design 2. parameter design 3. tolerance design

4. Tolerance
Tolerance must be placed on dimensions of a part permissible variation in size. Tolerance is the acceptable variation to the ideal or normal variations.

BEST PRACTICE
It is much more difficult to give prescribed set of

methods for embodiment design and conceptual design . The general objectives of the embodiment phase of design are the fulfillment of the required technical function.
