What is vermicomposting?
Vermes + Composting. Feed worms organic wastes such as used food, vegetables, animal manure, paper shred and cardboard shred. Fed to them in Worm Pits. Food broken down output = worm castings, humus, compost. Organic fertilizer that helps in growth of plants, maintain soil fertility, and does not harm nature and the flora and fauna.

Using organic and biodegradable substances, recycling them, feeding them to worms, which in due course produces compost . Can be used for agricultural, landscaping and production of natural gases.

Setting up of the bin

Set up the bed using materials such as shredded paper and cardboard and moisten them by soaking them in water. Introduce manure preferably cow dung as a layer on top of the bed, dilated with some water. Introduce organic wastes (dont use fish, human wastes, and meat). Mix them and let it naturally compost. Introduce worms. Cover with twigs and straw.

Output
Leave material in pit for 30-45 days.

Output compost.
Once produced, segregate. Separation techniques use of light (flash lights) and sieve. Dry compost, package and sell.

Less awareness among the farmers. Process to convert farmers to using chemical fertilizers is very time consuming. Publicities by government is not very effective. Resistance in the market to diverge from norms of farming practices.

Absence of competitors in the market means big opportunities for produces. Legitimate support by government to farmers to start this initiative. Wide ranging opportunities at an international level. More people becoming health conscious with the type of food they eat.

Hundreds of tons of biodegradable wastes being thrown into the city which means waste can be attained at nominal costs.

Threats

Big sellers of chemical fertilizers will not entertain new players, and wouldnt mind reducing their prices, to drive out the competition. Resistance of use of organic fertilizer due to customs and trade practices of using chemical fertilizers.
