This has been the richest part of the country throughout history. NW: rough & high terrain with moors & pastures Hills & Mountains (the Pennines, the Cheviots, the Scottish highlands) = serious obstacles to transport & communication. The central government found it difficult to control these areas, which have therefore developed & maintained a strong sense of their own regional identities.

You may already have some ideas that the British weather is going to be terrible, with rain and fog- 1). streets and constant gloomy days.
