The importance of using songs and poems in teaching English

Children grow up with songs and rhymes and develop their first language by them. songs and rhymes are the first experienced parts of communication in the childrens mother tongue. They listen and react to nursery rhymes and finger games spoken and often acted by their parents. So songs and rhymes give them an intimate feeling, a special connection with their human environment and influence the acquisition of their first language in a specific way.

The following points support foreign language acquisition:

they motivate to learn and to be active

music, rhythm and rhymes produce a positive live feeling

rhythm supports vocabulary and structure learning

children do not understand all words but do not feel inhibited

helps to practice pronunciation

Singing Reciting poems Role playing Acting out dialogues

And they do not think this is learning

4

Children
Pay attention to playing, not to learning
Even if a teacher decides to correct some important mistakes, they do not feel uncomfortable, because the game is the most important.

Naturally

"children really enjoy learning and singing songs"

They have fun doing rhythmic activities while reciting rhymes.

Pupils who start learning a second language meet certain barriers:

Many of them are too shy Finding ways to to repeat he same words break down their in the presence of other pupils in the classroom. fear is very So, they would rather important for it not say a word makes it possible than be wrong or incorrect to teach them a They do not practice and foreign language do not improve and make them their pronunciation and language. learn all by

themselves.

Problems
Not all teachers are able to read notes and to work out new songs. Therefore songs should be an important element in further vocational teacher training. The department of education should provide enough money for CDs and appropriate equipment for English lessons. A good help for quite unmusical teachers is to transfer new texts into well-known melodies.
